Monte Vista blanked Bayfield for the first half of high school football and consistently scored points throughout its 30-6 first Mountain League victory Friday night at Monte Vista.
Monte Vista improved to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in league play.
The loss drops the Wolverines to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in league.
Monte Vista led 14-0 at the half, then added eight points in the third quarter and eight in the fourth.
Bayfield scored on a 70-yard touchdown run by Aaron Velasquez to pull within 14-6 to start the second half.
"We had the momentum. I thought we could get back in it," Bayfield High School coach Marshall Hahn said.
Monte Vista, however, answered with yet another long scoring drive.
"I have to give them credit," Hahn said. "They had several long drives. They controlled the clock and limited our possession.
"We had three turnovers, and we didn't create any of our own. That's the story right there." Bayfield started the season 6-0 and 2-0 in league play but has lost its last three games to Salida, Aztec and Monte Vista by a collective score of 108-32.
BHS, with Class 2A postseason ramifications on the line, will host league rival Pagosa Springs at 7 p.m. next Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
