There was no secret, the Indians were going to run. And they did, all over the Demons.

In a battle of 8-1 Southwestern League contenders, Montrose secured the league title with a 30-14 win against Durango on Friday that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

The Indians (9-1, 4-0 SWL), who came in averaging 39 points per game, raced to a 24-0 lead at halftime while winning the battle of possession 17 minutes, 18 seconds to 6:42.

"They execute well, and they get off the football," DHS first-year head coach Greg Wyatt said.

Coming off a 20-14 loss to Grand Junction Central and a hard-fought win over Fossil Ridge, the undersized Demons (8-2, 2-2 SWL) finally met a rushing attack they couldn't contain, as Montrose plowed ahead for 428 yards on 61 attempts (while passing just eight times for 19 yards).

The Indians punted just once, and 6-foot-2, 200-pound tailback Jordan Passehl led the charge with 25 carries for 244 yards and two touchdowns.

Six-foot-two, 195-pound quarterback Nathan Robertson carried 17 times for 103 yards and a touchdown, and senior Glayden Berry took 12 handoffs forward for 54 yards and another score.

The DHS offense barely saw the field before the halftime whistle. The battering Indians attack went 80 yards in seven plays, 63 yards in 13, 63 in 10 and 52 in five for scoring drives.

Demon quarterbacks combined to throw four interceptions, one from senior Jordan Gillen and three from sophomore Joe Keresey, who entered the game trailing in the second quarter and went 10-for-20 for 120 yards and a touchdown.

"We've got to find more ways to get something going," Wyatt said. "It's something we worked on all week." Keresey found Dillon Lammon in the end zone for a 24-yard completion with 2:21 left in the fourth quarter, but the Indians answered with an eight-play, 52-yard drive for a touchdown.

Senior Gus Barnes finished off a tough day on a 50-yard touchdown run with little more than a minute remaining, compiling 120 yards.

"He battled," Wyatt said of Barnes. "He took quite a beating on those 16 carries." The Demons await seeding for the Class 4A state playoffs, which likely will yield a road game next weekend.

"We're still playing," Wyatt said. "There're only 16 teams in 4A that can say that. We've still got a goal to meet." heraldsports@durangoherald.com
