And the West is History

100 years ago: “Harry Frank, 38, a mining man and former auditer of Silverton Northern, died at a hospital in Denver where he was being treated for nervous trouble. Frank and the patient sharing his room escaped from nurses and barricaded themselves in a bathroom, where they slit each other’s throats repeatedly with razors. Both men died shortly thereafter.”

75 years ago: “Color-brush the gray, the smart, modern way: Clairol Touch-Up Crayon touches away those irritating gray hairs. $1, refills 50 cents.”

50 YEARS AGO: “The annual Mancos Days celebration will be held this Friday and Saturday. Friday’s program will start off with the Huck Finn fishing contest on the Mancos River with a prize for the biggest fish caught. At 1:30 p.m. there will be a parade, which will be followed by a ‘watermelon bust’.”

25 YEARS AGO: “Durango’s Ned Overend and Boulder’s Juli Furtado were upset winners Sunday in a Grundig/FIAC World Cup mountain bike race at the Deer Valley Ski Area in Park City, Utah.”
