A three-vehicle crash last week on U.S. Highway 160 west of Pagosa Springs has left one dead and four others with serious injuries.
According to Colorado State Trooper Josh Lewis, around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, a 2006 Dodge pickup was headed west on Highway 160 near mile marker 137 when it lost control and crossed the center line.
Mile marker 137 is about seven miles west of Pagosa Springs.
After crossing the center line, the Dodge pickup hit the left side of an oncoming 2004 Toyota SUV, which collided with another eastbound vehicle, a 2008 Ford pickup, Lewis said.
The driver of the Dodge pickup, 27-year-old Neil Caryl, of Loveland, was taken to Pagosa Springs Medical Center and died shortly after, Lewis said.
Talor Estrada, 24, of Arvada, and a boy – passengers of the Dodge pickup – were taken to Pagosa Springs Medical Center with serious injuries.
The driver of the Toyota SUV, Leslie Kron, 69, of Pagosa Springs, was taken to Pagosa Springs Medical Center with serious injuries.
The driver of the Ford pickup, Kellie Lewis of California, also was taken to Pagosa Springs Medical Center with serious injuries.
On Monday, Pagosa Springs Medical Center spokesman Jesse Hensle said all three adults were “treated and released” from Pagosa Springs Medical Center. However, that doesn’t clarify if they were released in good condition or transported elsewhere for additional care.
Attempts to find the patients in several Denver area hospitals were unsuccessful Monday.
Hensle declined to comment on the condition of the juvenile.
According to a GoFundMe page, Caryl and Estrada, with their child, were driving from Colorado to New Mexico to join family for Christmas. Estrada and the child “made it out of ICU” and “have a long road ahead of them – both physically and emotionally” the page says.
CSP’s Lewis said everyone involved in the crash wore seatbelts. Drugs, alcohol and excessive speed are not suspected as factors in the crash, and no charges are pending, Lewis said.
Lewis said weather conditions, specifically icy roads, are the suspected cause for Caryl’s vehicle losing control.
