Durango to observe Transgender Day of Remembrance

Unitarian church will host Sunday evening service

A local service will be held for International Transgender Day of Remembrance from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Universal Unitarian Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive.

The observance is an opportunity for communities to come together and remember those who have been victims of violence for being transgender, gender non-binary, biologically intersex or perceived as transgender.

The event, the fourth of its kind to be held in Durango, is sponsored by Four Corners Support for Transgender People, Allies and Relatives; the Unitarian church; Four Corners Rainbow Youth Center; and Four Corners Alliance for Diversity.

Internationally, the day recognizes the 1998 murder of Rita Hester, a highly-visible member of the Boston transgender community. Police have yet to find her killer.
