Fort Lewis cycling gunning for team title 22 at USA Cycling Road Nationals

Fort Lewis College Skyhawks arrive in N.C. for nationals

A team national title so far has eluded the Fort Lewis College Cycling team this season.

The Skyhawks have won at least one in eight consecutive years and boast 21 team titles overall.

The USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships on Saturday through Monday are their last chance for one this year.

“Picking a nationals team out of so many deserving riders is one of the toughest parts of the job but I think we did a great job of picking riders best suited to the courses while also working well as a team,” FLC road coach Ian Burnett said in a news release. “Things have been coming together for the team this spring, and, if the breaks go our way, we have a good shot at the team title.”

FLC brought a young squad to Asheville, North Carolina.

Ten of the 12 riders are underclassmen, and the team features zero seniors.

Sofia Gomez-Villafane and Dean Haas are the two juniors.

Both will compete in the team time trial, criterium and road race, the three events that will be contested at nationals.

Freshmen Maddie Chaves and Sydney Edmonson both will compete in all three events on the women’s side, as well.

Haas is the only male Skyhawk riding in the triple header.

Casey Hines will compete in the team time trial and road race, while Dominique Shore is entered in the criterium.

On the men’s side, Nathan Seafor will ride in the criterium and road race, and Ian McPherson, Zack Noonan and Max Thilen are competing in the team time trial and road race.

Nathan Seaford and Ryan Standish are entered in the criterium and road race, while Emmanuel Gagne will ride in the criterium.

The road race will be Friday with the criterium Saturday and time trial Sunday.

FLC will enter the nationals coming off a second-place finish in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference behind CU-Boulder, the same team that ended its eight-year mountain bike team title streak.
