Maybe we can use the lake by 2018

Robert Wilde wrote about “another fall with no progress” opening Lake Nighthorse (Herald, Oct. 1). I’m with him, but have come to realize that if it’s not about dogs or bikes, it simply doesn’t count in Durango.

We’ve known since the legislation was passed in 1968 that there would be a lake, but weren’t able to figure out how to empty the trash cans or police the recreational park there until a year or so ago. Last fall, Nighthorse was the only lake within a day’s drive from Durango more than 50 percent full and local residents still are fenced out.

Judging from how full boat storage facilities are in the area, I think Lake Nighthorse will be quite popular. What are the chances of progress by the 50th anniversary of the enabling legislation?
