I moved to Durango in 1973 and there have been sewage problems for most of the time since then.
The first city system was built in 1958 and was replaced with the existing facility in 1985. There was a lot of support before the plant was built to move it down La Posta Road, where the land was very reasonably priced.
Now is the time to move it to a location that will be suitable for the distant future. Where will the sewage go when Three Springs and Grandview areas are built to capacity?
To help pay for it, the city could build a restaurant/bar facility and lease it to an operator that would provide good food, drinks and entertainment right on the Animas River in place of the stinky facility that is there now. A facility such as this could provide substantial income to the city for 100 years or more to help pay for the new treatment plant.
Hopefully, a new treatment plant could be built that would not have to be replaced or moved for 100 years or more.
Get rid of the existing plant now before costs escalate even more. It would be a great improvement to have a beautiful park without seeing or smelling the existing facility.
