Respect Constitution Week Sept. 17-23

The Daughters of the American Revolution started the tradition of celebrating Constitution Week in 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Sept. 17 was originally called Citizenship Day, and on our calendars is shown as Citizenship Day and Constitution Week begins. The DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., is a memorial honoring the Constitution. The inscription on the pediment reads, “Constitution Hall – a memorial to that immortal document, the Constitution of the United States, in which are incorporated the principals of freedom, equality and justice for which our forefathers strove.” DAR Constitution Hall is the only structure dedicated to the U.S. Constitution.

“The Constitution does not solve our problems; it allows people freedom and opportunities to solve their own problems. It provides for representatives of the people to help solve problems. It provides an executive to enforce the laws and administer the government. It provides a judicial branch to say what the law means; from there on it is up to the people.” These words were written by Warren E. Burger, chief justice of the United States (1969-1986.)

How blessed are we to have this remarkable document for 228 years helping to guide our government. We thank our loyal, brave veterans in all branches of the military, who have kept our government and our country and its people safe, at much cost to themselves, they need our support.

During this week study the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Make sure your children learn the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, recited with their right hand placed over their heart and the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” There is much to be thankful for and have pride in this country.
