Students fortunate 9-R has priorities straight

Last night was a performance by the fourth and fifth graders at Needham Elementary. It was energetic, it was fun and it was a joy to watch. In The Durango Herald on Dec. 11, a photo caption read: “Funding for art and music classes has been decimated in school districts throughout the state, but Durango schools’ Superintendent Daniel Snowberger says that won’t happen here.”

All I could think of as our children performed was the caption above. I am so glad that Snowberger and our school board have the proper priorities for our schools. In a perfect world, we would not be faced with such choices, but I believe that having an education including the arts and humanities in balance with the three Rs is important to our children and to us as a community. Hats off to Snowberger and the board for making the proper choices. And a big hats off to Molly Jensen, the music teacher at Needham Elementary, and all the teachers and staff who contributed to a very successful program.
