So as everyone knows, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. And most people know that students in Durango and surrounding areas have school that day. My question is: Why do our students have a day off for a great man (Martin Luther King Jr.) who helped advance civil rights, but not for the men and women in our country who fought for our freedom?
Veterans Day is a day for remembrance of fallen heroes and wounded heroes. There are people in the schools who might have had a relative in the military, and even they know that they are treated unfairly. My grandfather was in many wars, and I took the day off from school to remember him because our school district doesn’t think we need the day off.
That is messed up. If we can have a day of Martin Luther King Jr., we can have a day off for the service men and women.
