The West Is History

100 years ago: “Bill Shaffer brought word down from Oro Fino yesterday that mountain rats had carried off half a case of eggs from a neighboring prospector and had taken them over a rocky trail for half a mile, without cracking a shell. Mountain rats are awful this year.”

75 YEARS AGO: “Members of Basin Sportsmen, Inc., concluded plans for distributing fingerling native trout to the headwaters of area streams using pack horses.”

50 YEARS AGO: “The world’s greatest jeep road will be completed this week over the top of Imogene Pass connecting San Miguel and Ouray counties.”

25 YEARS AGO: “La Plata County Sheriff records: Stallion at large near 356 County Road 514 at 8:05 a.m. Neighbor wanted to know if he could shoot the horse because the animal is a ‘deadly weapon.’ Owner later returned ‘killer’ horse to stall.”
