La Plata County voters have until 7 p.m. Tuesday to cast ballots in this year’s primary election leading up to November’s general election.

Neither Democrats nor Republicans have contested races during the primary for La Plata County offices. But several regional and state offices are contested, including a few that are driving higher-than-average voter turnout, Clerk and Recorder Tiffany Lee said in a previous interview.

Colorado’s race for 3rd Congressional District has been closely watched locally and statewide. The seat is currently held by Republican Lauren Boebert, a restaurant owner in Rifle who gained national attention for her gun rights activism and pointed attacks on social media and cable news channels. She is being challenged by state Sen. Don Coram, a moderate Republican from Montrose who operates a hemp farm and has supported marijuana legalization and LGBTQ rights in the state Legislature.

Three candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination for the 3rd Congressional District, including Sol Sandoval, a community activist and organizer from Pueblo; Alex Walker, an engineer from Avon; and Adam Frisch, a former Aspen City Council member.

Other notable contested races include the Republican primary for governor involving candidates Greg Lopez and Heidi Ganahl; and the three-way race for the Republican nomination for Colorado secretary of state involving Tina Peters, Mike O’Donnell and Pam Anderson.

Unaffiliated voters can vote in either party’s primary, but they can vote in only one, otherwise both ballots will be voided.

Election officials say it is too late to send ballots by mail, but there are six ballot drop-off locations in La Plata County:

  • La Plata County Clerk and Recorder’s Office, 679 Turner Drive, Suite C.
  • La Plata County Administration Building, 1101 East Second Ave.
  • La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
  • Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Drive.
  • Bayfield Town Hall, 1199 Bayfield Parkway, Bayfield.
  • Farmers Fresh Market, 535 Goddard Ave., Ignacio.
