It’s no easy feat for a business to stick around on Main Avenue for decades, but that’s exactly what Karyn Gabaldon Arts has done – for more than three decades, to be exact.

Q: How long has the gallery been around?

A: I started in 1980 (first as a pottery shop, then Gallery Ultima, then Karyn Gabaldon Arts).

Q: What’s your specialty?

A: I would say it’s contemporary landscapes, or Zen, almost. Basically, I carry my work, my paintings. And then everything else – the jewelry and everything else – I try to get artists that make their living off their arts because I want to support them. Everything kind of has a little contemporary, Zen twist to it, I would say.

Q: How many artists do you represent?

A: I would say maybe 30.

Q: What do you think your gallery brings to Durango?

A: I think the gallery kind of brings a freshness to the Southwest look. ... People come in here and they bring their kids, and that’s what I love. I started my gallery by going to galleries in Santa Fe when I was 5 years old, and I always knew that’s what I was going to do. I think it’s really important for all ages to have access to the arts. This is my community; this is what I like to give to the community.
