In America, we’re often encouraged to think out of the box, look at situations from different points of view and examine a problem not from a standard perspective. Diversity is a positive ingredient.I am an independent, and it bothers me that all of our present county commissioners are of the same party who almost always vote the same. How often do they have fresh, separate opinions and think in unlike ways?Mark Twain said something along the line of “when people in a room all think the same, there really isn’t much thinking going on.” Neither party has a monopoly on good or bad ideas. We have the opportunity to elect a candidate of a different party who will bring other ideas to the county commission – Paul Black. He’s a young, competent, self-employed businessman/entrepreneur who will bring a unique perspective to the Board of County Commissioners.Paul Black has shown that he is a good listener, observant and possesses what seems to be rare in today’s government – a large amount of common sense. John Prine said, “It don’t make much sense that common sense, don’t make no sense no more.”Vote for Paul Black for La Plata County commissioner.Dave ThomsonIgnacio

For over eight months our neighborhood group has been working to oppose the proposed location of a cell tower near our homes. In the Herald article (Herald, Oct. 16), there were many misleading statements leading to false impressions as to our intentions. We are not opposed to cell service in our area, just the tower location.Fidelity towers has been proposing this tower since 2013 and finally found an absentee landowner to lease them a site. In this location, the projected service area does not include cell service to the majority of residents in Forest Lakes and only serves a small portion of County Road 240. It will not serve 5,000 residents as claimed by Fidelity. There are more suitable sites near and in Forest Lakes that better meet their cell service goals, including more coverage in Forest Lakes. The reporter’s dog-whistle reference to the CDF and anti-vaxxing stemmed from a comment by only one individual who had not been involved with our position until the day she spoke. Far more reputable sources were cited by other speakers. The day of the meeting, T-Mobile was allowed to submit an inflammatory letter stating not having cell service in the area has caused lives to be lost, an unsubstantiated claim, not supported by the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District. All we want is a safe, nonintrusive location which will provide reliable service for all area residents. This is not about no cell service, just a different location.Respectfully,Debra and Gregg Janus; Mark and Ellen James; Terry Grimes; J.L. and Diana Boudreaux; Chris Rodi and Robin Moyle; Ted Cercos; David and Lyn Bishop; Rhonda and Kevin Gould; Mike and Maria Gainey; Paul and Dani Wilcock; Tim Deal; Sam Haines; Mike and Sue Lamon; Chuck and Robin Cole; Robert and Joelle Hughes; Paul and Ashley Cardwell

Planet Earth is in an extinction crisis, and climate change is affecting us and all species on Earth now and in the future. No mention of this from the presidential candidates. This is crucial to address.Species are going extinct at a rate 100 times the background rate due to human activity: habitat loss, deforestation, overfishing, an economy using natural resources with no regard to pollution, wastes or ecological devastation and climate change due to our addiction to fossil fuels. In this election, we must absolutely not consider Trump, who will undo the climate work done by Biden and will continue gutting the Endangered Species Act and undoing work to conserve our wildlife and habitats upon which our lives and future depend.Democrats will continue conservation of habitats and species, our rich and beautiful world, and not at the expense of the economy, jobs and federal debt. In the past 100 years, the economy and job growth under Democrats was twice as much as under Republicans. Likewise, Trump added twice as much debt as Biden. Heed the words of JFK: “Ask not what the country can do for you, but what you can do for the country,” and I say planet Earth.Vote for conservation of biodiversity, moving from fossil fuel economy toward more renewable energies, to sustainability, to ensure your children’s future. We cannot go back, we need to move forward using our ingenuity and care for the Earth. Vote Democrat.Margaret Ann MayerDurango

“When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.” While the author of this often-quoted phrase has been debated (but was probably James Waterman Wise), Donald Trump created his very own version of the concept on his social media channel, posting a freakish, self-aggrandizing video casting himself as a messianic figure. The narration, equally unorthodox and surreal, claimed, “And on June 14, 1946, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, ‘I need a caretaker.’ So, God gave us Trump.”My religious background taught the evil of “false prophets” as well as warnings of deep ego and excessive pride. This Trump post displays the epitome of those attributes, especially outrageous from a man who we know has cheated workers, been convicted of sexual assault, bragged about sexual transgressions, bankrupt his casinos, left students fleeced at his fraudulent school, paid political hush money to a porn star and then hid the payment from legally required reporting on his campaign and business records. Now this man is asking us to believe he was sent by God? Trump has truly passed into delusion and clinically serious narcissism. Please, should you be considering voting for this sick man, think deeply about the consequences of voting for one who so flagrantly violates and thus mocks Christian values. Thank you.Connie DurandDurango
