(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)Paul SancyaMILWAUKEE – Giannis Antetokounmpo ended one of the greatest NBA Finals ever with 50 points and a championship Milwaukee waited 50 years to win again.Antetokounmpo added 14 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns 105-98 on Tuesday night to win the series 4-2. It was the third game this series with at least 40 points and 10 rebounds for Antetokounmpo, a dominant debut finals performance that takes its place among some of the game's greatest. He shot 16 for 25 from the field and made an unbelievable 17-of-19 free throws — a spectacular showing for any shooter, let alone one who was hitting just 55.6% in the postseason and was ridiculed for it at times. He hopped around the court waving his arms with 20 seconds remaining to encourage fans to cheer, but there was no need. Their voices had been booming inside and outside for hours by then, having waited 50 years to celebrate a winner after Lew Alcindor — before becoming Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — and Oscar Robertson led the Bucks to the championship in 1971.Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) reads with the championship trophy after defeating the Phoenix Suns in Game 6 of basketball's NBA Finals in Milwaukee, Tuesday, July 20, 2021. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)Paul SancyaIn a season played played largely without fans, the Bucks had 65,000 of them packed into the Deer District outside, a wild party that figured to last deep into the Midwestern night. The party wasn't bad inside, either: Confetti rained down inside as fans chanted “Bucks in 6! Bucks in 6!” — a hopeful boast by former player that turned out to be a prophetic rallying cry.The Bucks became the fifth team to win the NBA Finals after trailing 2-0 and the first to do it by winning the next four games since Miami against Dallas in 2006.Chris Paul scored 26 points to end his first NBA Finals appearance in his 16th season. Devin Booker added 19 points but shot just 8 for 22 and missed all seven 3-pointers after scoring 40 points in each of the last two games. The teams that came into the NBA together as expansion clubs in 1968 delivered a fine finals, with the last three games all in the balance deep into the fourth quarter. The Bucks won them largely because of Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP in the regular season who raised his game even higher in the finals and was voted the NBA Finals MVP.He was the star of these finals in every way, from his powerful play on the court to his humble thoughts in interviews to even taking time after Tuesday night's win to find children to high-five amid the celebrations. And he did it all after missing the final two games of the Eastern Conference finals with a hyperextended left knee, an injury that at first he feared could be serious to end his season.Just think what people would have missed.Milwaukee Bucks guard Jrue Holiday (21) is fouled by Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker (1) during the second half of Game 6 of basketball's NBA Finals Tuesday, July 20, 2021, in Milwaukee. (AP Photo/Aaron Gash)Aaron GashKhris Middleton scored 17 points for the Bucks and Bobby Portis came off the bench with 16. Jrue Holiday had 12 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds to go along with his usual sturdy defense that helped finally cool off Booker. The Bucks thought they might be here the last two seasons. They had the NBA’s best record in 2018-19 but blew a 2-0 lead against Toronto in the Eastern Conference finals. They came back with the best record again last season but never regained their momentum after the season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic in March. They were eliminated in the second round by Miami in the bubble. The Bucks traded for Holiday before this season and even though they weren’t quite as strong in the regular season, they were finally NBA Finals ready.Fans gather in the Deer District for Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Phoenix Suns at Fiserv Forum on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, in Milwaukee. (Angela Peterson/Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel via AP)Angela PetersonAnd Milwaukee was ready for the moment.Fans began filling the streets and restaurants in the afternoon on what felt like a holiday in Milwaukee. The Brewers moved up the start time of their home game against Kansas City to be played in the afternoon to accommodate Milwaukee fans — and Brewers star Christian Yelich, who was part of the crowd inside Fiserv Forum. The game was tied at 77 after three quarters but Antetokoumpo had 13 points in the fourth to make sure Milwaukee wouldn't have to go back to Phoenix for Game 7 on Thursday. The Suns returned to the postseason for the first time since 2010 but remain without a title and have never won more than two games in their three appearances in the NBA Finals.TIP-INSSuns: The Suns scored their fewest points in a first quarter in this postseason when they had 16. ...
DENVER – On Damian Lillard's record-breaking night when he was hitting one shot after another from behind the arc and almost beyond belief, it was Michael Porter Jr. who quietly sank the biggest basket of all.MPJ's 3-pointer from the left corner barely fluttered the net with 1:33 left in the second overtime and proved the game-winner as the Denver Nuggets squelched an epic comeback by the Portland Trail Blazers with a 147-140 win Tuesday night in Game 5 of their best-of-seven playoff series.“That’s what playoff basketball is," Porter said after the thriller that included a dozen lead changes and 11 ties, including long 3s by Lillard that forced overtime and the second OT.Lillard's night included a franchise playoff record 55 points and NBA playoff record 12 3-pointers. He eclipsed the mark of 11 set by Golden State’s Klay Thompson at Oklahoma City on May 28, 2016.“It was the best playoff performance I’ve ever seen," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said."At this point, all that matters is we can’t lose another game in the series,” Lillard shrugged.Portland Trail Blazers forward Norman Powell (24) pressures Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. (1) during the first half of Game 5 of a first-round NBA basketball playoff series Tuesday, June 1, 2021, in Denver. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey)Jack DempseyAnd he, for one, isn't going to dwell on his big night and even bigger letdown.“If I don’t put it behind me, and hold onto it, it’s going to get in the way of what we need to do in the next one," Lillard said.Lillard scored 17 of Portland's 19 points in the two overtimes, but he didn't score again after his 12th 3-pointer in 17 attempts put the Blazers ahead 140-138 with 3:47 left. And his teammates didn't score again, either.Nikola Jokic, who scored 38 points and came one assist shy of a triple-double, tied it at 140 with a layup and Porter broke the tie with a 3 from the left corner with 1:33 left off a sweet pass from Jokic. The Blazers still were within three points — and Lillard's range — until a pair of costly mistakes sent them back to Portland for Game 6 on Thursday night trailing the Nuggets 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.First, Robert Covington missed a dunk with 41 seconds left and then CJ McCollum stepped out of bounds with 9.1 seconds left and Lillard setting up for another 3.“It’s a shame we wasted one of the all-time best performances by not being more supportive of him,” McCollum said.Monte Morris, who scored 28 points off the bench, hit a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds to seal it, and Shaq Harrison added two free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining.Lillard's 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation tied it at 121, capping a 22-point comeback. His 3 with 6.4 seconds left in the first overtime tied it at 135 and that capped Portland's comeback from a quick nine-point deficit in the extra period after Denver hit a trio of 3s.Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (15) shoots against Portland Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic (27) during the first half of Game 5 of a first-round NBA basketball playoff series Tuesday, June 1, 2021, in Denver. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey)Jack Dempsey“We won and lost that game so many times before ultimately winning it,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. ”... We never got down. Every time they threw a haymaker and got us down on the canvas, we got up and were able to pull it out in the end."Porter, who finished with 26 points, said it wasn't hard to keep composed when Lillard kept hitting daggers to extend the game.“It was 0-0. We knew there was only 5 minutes. We knew we couldn't hang our heads,” Porter said. “It was a big game and we needed it.”When Jokic's precision pass found Porter in the left corner in the second overtime, “I said I’ve got to make up for that buzzer beater than Dame hit. I got to make up for it,” Porter recounted. He sure did, and by holding on, Denver improved to 187-1 in games since April 2, 2008, in which they led at any point by 22 or more, including the postseason.Jokic, who added 11 rebounds and nine assists, was amazed by Lillard's performance.“It was a pleasure to be on the court,” he said, "just to witness that.”ORDER ON THE COURTNuggets coach Michael Malone had a strong reaction to the spate of bad fan behavior across the NBA, saying it “tarnishes the game.”“People are acting the fool. That’s my reaction. And it’s almost like it’s a copycat thing now: who can one-up the other person?” Malone said. ”... I think some people are coming out of this COVID pandemic and maybe they just are trying to express themselves. But that’s not the way to do it. Let the players play the game, enjoy the game and keep your (rear) in the seat, keep your water bottles in your lap and please don’t spit or use any racist language to any player."TIP-INS:Trail Blazers: Lillard bounced back from his 10-point performance on 1-of-10 shooting in Game 4 to hit 17 of 24 shots, including 12 of 17 from long range and 9 of 10 from the stripe.Nuggets: Denver’s first basket of the second half came at the 9:51 mark on Aaron Gordon’s dunk. ...
Fans yell from the stands as rain delayed the start of the final practice session for the Indianapolis 500 auto race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Friday, May 28, 2021. (AP Photo/Michael Conroy)Michael Conroy Party Time: Indy 500 is biggest sporting event of pandemicINDIANAPOLIS – The milk is on ice, celebrities are in the house and Indianapolis Motor Speedway is buzzing again both with the roar of engines and the largest crowd at a sporting event since the start of the pandemic. The Indianapolis 500 will welcome a sold-out 135,000 spectators on Sunday — nine months after the race ran without fans for the first time in its 105-year history — and drop the green flag on a packed house and a party not seen since early 2020.“We're just excited to be opening up America," said Roger Penske, who bought Indianapolis in January 2020, roughly two months before the pandemic shut down the country. The speedway has 240,000 permanent grandstand seats and space in the infield and suites to accommodate nearly 400,000 on race day. But Penske couldn't open the gates until October, when only 10,000 a day were permitted into the landmark facility over a three-day weekend for an IndyCar race.Americans are eager to return to some sort of normalcy. They want their traditions and their sports back, none more so than "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” which withstood world wars, the Great Depression and the now the pandemic.Through vaccinations, more than 90,000 done at the speedway, Penske got the clearance to at last permit 40% attendance.“The good news is, it’s started to roll here and I think with opening America we can be the premiere event,” he said. “It’s an honor for us to even be in a position to execute something like that. We’re going to continue to fine tune it. I would do the same transaction again. I just see the benefits on a longer term basis. I really want to run as big as my anticipation and not my exception.”And so it is with expectation and not anticipation that six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon starts from the pole Sunday for the fourth time at the Indy 500. Dixon is considered the best driver of his generation and trails Mario Andretti by only one victory for second on IndyCar's all-time wins list. He has just one Indy 500 victory, in 2008, and three runner-up finishes.“It’s the biggest race in the world and the most difficult race in the world. I feel very lucky and privileged to have won it once but that also drives you into a deeper will to want to win it again,” Dixon said. “Would I trade some championships for 500 wins? Maybe. I don’t know. I feel like there’s a lot of emphasis on IndyCar championships but the Indy 500 is the Indy 500.”Dixon and the four Chip Ganassi Racing entries are the most consistent at Indianapolis leading into the 500. The group includes Tony Kanaan, who at 46 is the oldest driver in the field, and Alex Palou, who wrecked in Saturday qualifying but rebounded Sunday to qualify sixth alongside Kanaan. This season has seen a changing of the guard with five different winners through the first five races of the season, four of them 24 years or younger. Three are first time winners and Dixon is the only veteran so far to represent in the win column. He starts on the front row alongside Colton Herta, a 21-year-old four-race winner who earlier this month earned a two-year contract extension from Andretti Autosport, and Rinus Veekay, at 20 the youngest front-row starter in race history.VeeKay earned his first career win earlier this month on Indy's road course and the Borat-loving Dutchman said the victory has allowed him to show more of his playful personality. He's pursued a professional race car career for more than half his life and shortened his last name from van Kalmthout to VK help ease his transition for United States sponsorship negotiations before finally settling on the current form of VeeKay.A butterfly landed on his shoulder in the last two weeks, some of his Ed Carpenter Racing crew members spotted red Cardinals for luck, and VeeKay now believes he's got as good a shot as any other youngster in the field to pull off an Indy 500 upset.“We grew up in the computer era, the digital era,” VeeKay said. “That helps the simulators are very normal to us, help us feel comfortable in the simulator. That maybe translates to better results.”The impressive youth group includes Pato O'Ward, the 22-year-old Mexican who has shot to popularity with Arrow McLaren SP and is teammates in the 500 with two-time race winner Juan Pablo Montoya. McLaren brought Montoya back to the race for the first time since 2017 and isn't overly concerned with this crop of young kids.“At the end of the day you look at how many young guys have won the 500 the last few years?” Montoya said. “Do they have a shot? For sure, no question. I think Pato and Herta and all those kids, they’ve got a lot of talent and everything. You’ve got to make it to 200 laps, you know? So we’ll see.”Nobody knows what's up with the Team Penske cars after a questionable qualifying effort. Will Power won in 2018 and Simon Pagenuad won in 2019, but Power barely qualified for the race.“Our cars are good every Sunday,” said an unconcerned Penske, winner of a record 18 Indy 500s.Marco Andretti, last year's pole-sitter, is back for the only race on his IndyCar calendar and hated his car the entire week. A change made right after qualifying last Sunday settled him down and now he thinks he might have a shot to win from 25th.Andretti is one of six Andretti Autosport entries but Herta has become the star. Alexander Rossi, winner of the 100th running back in 2016 as a 24-year-old rookie, is closing in on a two years without an IndyCar Series win. He was second in the 500 in 2019, fourth in 2018 and still trying to recapture the joy of that surprise victory.“Every year that goes by and you watch someone else win, it's like a knife in your heart because you know how special Indy is because you got to taste it," Rossi said. “It's like having the best dessert in the world and then you don't get to have it anymore.”The race includes nine former winners, including two-time and reigning race winner Takuma Sato of Rahal Letterman Lanigan. But so many young new drivers plan to contend Sunday and Dixon cautions against getting too confident at one of the most daunting tracks in the world. There's a difference, Dixon noted, between champions and race winners and Josef Newgarden said it took him several seasons to figure that out. Newgarden is now a two-time IndyCar champion but still seeking his first Indy 500 victory.“There are guys who are fast and have elements of the whole package, but they don't have everything,” Newgarden said. "There's a difference between someone who is really good and flashy and entertaining and wins races and never wins a championship.“When you look at the 500 and what it requires, versus what the championship requires, they are different. There's an argument of which would you prefer. And that's a very different question.”ODDS AND ENDS: Scott Dixon is the 13-4 favorite to win the Indy 500. The last driver to win from the pole was Simon Pagenaud in 2019.
NEW YORK – José Peraza homered starting the third inning of the opener and followed with a tiebreaking single in the fourth inning of the second game, helping the New York Mets sweep a doubleheader from the Colorado Rockies 1-0 and 4-2 Thursday.Marcus Stroman (4-4) ended a six-start winless streak, allowing three hits over six innings in the first game. Aaron Loup (2-0) pitched a one-hit fifth inning to win the second game.Peraza, signed to be a reserve but pressed into everyday duty in the infield due to the Mets’ many injuries, went 2 for 4 with three RBIs in the doubleheader after hitting .156 (5 for 32) with a homer and four RBIs in his previous 11 games.“You just have to be prepared, and that’s what I’ve been doing,” Peraza said through an interpreter. “I’m going to try to do my best so we can win every single game. At the end of the day, it’s just being prepared for your opportunity and this is what I’m doing now.”The doubleheader sweep was the second of the season for the Mets, who have split two other twin bills. Stroman has started a game in three of New York’s doubleheaders, pitching 17 innings.“We only have to use him and a reliever,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said. “So that’s a blessing to go to the second game, where you have more arms available so you can kind of be a little bit bolder earlier in that game, even though it’s a seven-inning game.”Colorado lost three in a row after winning the series opener, falling to 3-20 with eight shutout losses on the road this year. The Rockies are 16-12 at mile-high Coors Field, where they have scored in every game.New York Mets starting pitcher Marcus Stroman reacts as he leaves the field during the sixth inning of the first baseball game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field, Thursday, May 27, 2021, in New York. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)Seth Wenig“You’ve got to tip your hat at times to the opposing pitchers — they threw the ball well. They’ve got a good pitching staff,” manager Bud Black said after the Mets held Colorado to six runs in the series. “We had some opportunities in really, four low-scoring games, and we just couldn’t break through.”Rockies shortstop Trevor Story left the second game in the fourth inning due to what Black said was “general tightness around the elbow,” one inning after Story made a diving stop and threw out Cameron Maybin on a grounder up the middle. Black said Story was day to day.“His arm tightened up as the inning went on and when he got into the dugout he let Keith know,” Black said, referring to head athletic trainer Keith Dugger. “That progressed to the point where we’re going to be cautious.”Before the doubleheader, Rojas announced right-hander Noah Syndergaard’s return from Tommy John surgery will be delayed beyond June. Syndergaard, rehabilitating from the operation on March 26 last year, had an MRI that revealed right elbow inflammation and was told not to throw for six weeks.New York also is missing right-hander right-hander Carlos Carrasco, sidelined until late June or early July by a strained right hamstring that has kept him out since spring training.“Right now, just being in the middle of the season, I’m looking forward to having everyone healthy at some point,” Rojas said Thursday morning.Stroman had been 0-4 since winning in Denver on April 18. He struck out three and walked two, lowering his ERA to 2.47. Stroman pitched at least six innings for the fourth straight start and the seventh time this season.A 2017 AL Gold Glove winner, he helped himself out in the fifth inning, when he raced to field a bunt up the third-base line and threw out Garrett Hampson by a step.Edwin Díaz got three straight outs to remain perfect in nine save chances. New York pitched its fourth shutout this season.Peraza’s home run, on a first-pitch slider, was one of only three hits for the Mets off Germán Márquez (3-5), who struck out eight, walked one and needed just 62 pitches for his third complete game in 117 big league starts. It was the fewest pitches in a complete game of at least six innings since at least 1901; Pittsburgh's Iván Nova threw 57 pitches in a 5 1/3 inning complete game for Pittsburgh against the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 29, 2016.“Just a hard-luck loss for Germán,” Black said.New York Mets' Jose Peraza looks up as he rounds the bases after hitting a home run during the third inning in the first baseball game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field, Thursday, May 27, 2021, in New York. McMahon, who homered twice in the series, hit a game-ending flyout off Jacob Barnes, who got his second save.MCCANN CANMcCann, who never played first base as a professional before starting there in Monday’s series opener, had a pair of unassisted putouts in the first inning and ranged into the hole to snare a grounder by Raimel Tapia in the third and tossed to Stroman at first, who caught the ball and stepped on the base in one motion. Tapia was ruled safe by umpire Shane Livensparger, but the call was reversed in a video review.TRAINER’S ROOMRockies: LHP Ben Bowden (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a rehab stint Thursday with Triple-A Albuquerque.
Golden State Warriors forward Kent Bazemore, top, pours water on the head of guard Stephen Curry after an NBA basketball game against the Memphis Grizzlies in San Francisco, Sunday, May 16, 2021. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)Jeff ChiuLeBron vs. Steph.Oh, what a way to get into NBA playoff mode. The matchups for the NBA’s new play-in tournament are set. It starts Tuesday night with the Eastern Conference: No. 10 Charlotte at No. 9 Indiana and No. 8 Washington at No. 7 Boston. And things shift to the Western Conference on Wednesday night: No. 10 San Antonio at No. 9 Memphis and No. 8 Golden State at the seventh-seeded Los Angeles Lakers.LeBron James and Stephen Curry have squared off four times for championships, back in the days of those Warriors-Cleveland matchups in the NBA Finals being annual events. They’ll square off Wednesday for a slightly different prize — the No. 7 seed in the West playoffs, but it’ll still be a game loaded with hype and intrigue.“It’ll be a different scenario, but another chapter in it,” said Curry, the NBA's scoring champion this season for the second time in his career. “At the end of the day, you expect greatness. That’s the part I’ve enjoyed so much about playing in the finals against him ... those games that matter, it just brings out another level of intensity and excitement and a sense of urgency about it, because you know how good you have to play to win games like that.”The Lakers are still the second choice to win the NBA title, according to FanDuel, behind only Brooklyn. And they’re the favorites to win the West. Problem is, technically, they’re not in the playoffs yet — and they need a win in the play-in round, Wednesday or Friday if necessary, just to get back to the postseason and have a chance to defend their championship.James said he considers Curry the MVP of the NBA this season. He's eager to cross paths in a big-time moment with Curry and the Warriors once again, and said he'll take a playoff-game approach to the play-in.Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) celebrates after scoring against the New Orleans Pelicans in the third quarter of an NBA basketball game in New Orleans, Sunday, May 16, 2021. (AP Photo/Derick Hingle)Derick Hingle“They've got championship DNA as well," James said. “They've been there. They know what it takes and what it feels like to be in pressure games."Confidence among the Lakers does not appear to be in short supply. They've been banged up all season, were without James and Anthony Davis for long stretches and might have gotten another scare when James appeared to tweak his problematic right ankle late in Sunday's finale in New Orleans.James said afterward that he'll be fine, ready for what comes next. He made headlines a couple of weeks ago when he said the person at the NBA responsible for coming up with the idea of the play-in tournament should be fired. If the Lakers don't win one of their next two games and wind up missing the playoffs, his opinion of the tourney will figure to get worse.“We’re getting healthy at the right time,” Lakers veteran Jared Dudley said. “And nobody wants to see a healthy Lakers team.”Under the old system, the Lakers, Warriors, Celtics and Wizards would be in the playoffs. The Grizzlies, Spurs, Pacers and Hornets would be out.Getting to the No. 8 spot for the play-in round in the East is a massive comeback for the Wizards, who started the season 0-5 and 3-12, were shut down for two weeks in January for coronavirus-related issues, had to play 38 games in the season’s final 67 days to make up for lost time and were 17-32 early last month. They’re 17-6 since. The play-in was their path to saving the season.“I'm with the King, man. Why do they have this play-in thing? Whoever did that, they need to be fired," Washington coach Scott Brooks said, tongue firmly in cheek behind his mask. “No, I'm kidding. I love this. It created so much excitement the last two weeks, and as we all know any time you can create excitement and meaningful games in the last 10 games of the season it's great for everyone involved."The 7-8 game winners in each conference go to the playoffs as No. 7 seeds; the West winner will play Phoenix in the first round, the East winner draws a matchup with Brooklyn. The 7-8 game loser will play host to the 9 vs. 10 winner in each conference; whoever prevails there will be the No. 8 seed and meet either Utah — the NBA’s overall No. 1 seed — out West or Philadelphia in the East. But before the playoffs officially begin this weekend, LeBron vs. Steph — a pair of guys who both just happened to be born in Akron, Ohio — looms.“You’re talking about two of the greatest players of all time,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “Both guys are still playing at such an elite level. And of course, four meetings in the finals is going to create a rivalry. But there’s obviously tremendous mutual respect between the two of them.”The other matchups are set: No. 3 Milwaukee faces No. 6 Miami and No. 4 New York plays No. 5 Atlanta in the East quarterfinals, while No. 3 Denver meets No. 6 Portland and the fourth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers drew No. 5 Dallas in the West quarterfinals.Denver lost to Portland on Sunday, a result that kept the Blazers from the play-in — and kept the Nuggets from seeing the Lakers in Round 1.“Good strategy,” Dudley said.Boston and the Lakers have the inside track to postseason spots. As the highest-seeded teams in the play-in, they will get two chances if necessary, both at home, to win just one game and make the playoffs.“You win, you’re in. You lose, you’re not,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “I think that that’s something that will add a great deal of intrigue to fans and people are going to be excited about it. But you’ve got to be appropriately prepared, again, to play a fast game with a clear mind.”The game to decide No. 8 in the East is Thursday, and the one that’ll decide No. 8 in the West is Friday. The playoffs start Saturday.“We’re excited that we have the opportunity to keep playing,” Kerr said.Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) reacts after shooting a 3-point basket against the Memphis Grizzlies during the second half of an NBA basketball game in San Francisco, Sunday, May 16, 2021.
Durango's Christopher Blevins made his elite men's UCI World Cup debut last Sunday in Albstadt, Germany. He worked his way to a 13th-place finish to boost his 2021 Olympic chances. Courtesy of USA CyclingCourtesy of USA CyclingBlevins with chance to further Olympic caseChristopher Blevins went from last man in the 40-rider field to 16th in his first elite men’s short-track race through snow and rain in Germany. Then, he climbed even higher in his first World Cup cross-country race in the elite field. The 23-year-old from Durango finished 13th overall at the first International Cycling Union (UCI) Cross-Country Mountain Bike World Cup last weekend in Albstadt, Germany. His sensational start in his jump up from the under-23 ranks to elite saw him climb nine spots in the UCI world rankings to 30th.The most decorated American U23 rider of all time finished the elite race in 1 hour, 22 minutes, 49 seconds. France’s Victor Koretzky, 27, won the race in 1:20:23, two seconds in front of Swiss powerhouse Nino Schurter. There were 151 men in the race.“That’s one I’m proud of for sure, and I’m so thankful for the team around me both near and far,” Blevins said in a post to Instagram.Blevins got another crack in short-track at the second World Cup on Friday in Nové Město, Czech Republic. But a couple of mechanical issues kept him from surging and saw him finish 34th. He will look for a cleaner ride Sunday in cross-country, though the wet and muddy course figures to only deteriorate further during the weekend of racing. After last weekend’s races, Blevins said he was even happier to see Trinity Racing teammate Haley Batten of Utah take third place in her elite level debut in cross-country. Batten did even better Friday when she dominated the women’s short-track in Nové Město to earn her first elite victory.“The real win of my day was watching (Batten) ride to third place against the best women in the world,” Blevins said after the race in Germany. “I’ve seen her fight and fight and fight through every stepping stone and knew she was capable of this and many more.”These two weeks in Europe are important for both Trinity riders who will seek selection from USA Cycling for the 2021 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. On the women’s side, Kate Courtney, who was fourth in Albstadt, locked up an auto selection with her 2019 performance, and now Batten is a lock for one of the two other American women’s spots at the Olympics. The U.S. women, by virtue of being ranked in the top-two in the nation’s ranking, will get to send three riders to the Olympics to compete in cross-country. The men, however, are ranked 14th and will once again only get to send one man to the Olympics. That selection will come down to Blevins and Utah’s Keegan Swenson, the reigning national champion in cross-country.Swenson, who placed 27th in Friday’s short-track in Nové Město, had a tough World Cup weekend in Germany, as he finished 81st in cross-country and was the third American overall behind Durango’s Cole Paton, who worked his way up from 98th starting position to place 54th in 1:26:55.“It’s challenging to say the least, starting in the back, hopping on and off the bike to avoid pileups, being stuck at the singletrack – forced to wait with nowhere to go,” Paton said in a post to Instagram. “But, I stayed positive and clawed my way up to 54th. I’m happy with that ride and excited for another opportunity in Czech. Feeling good on the bike and hoping to put another clean race together.”According to selection criteria, an eighth-place or better finish for Blevins on Sunday could gain him automatic qualification for the Olympics if he finishes higher than Swenson.“As the selection criteria details, if an athlete, for both men and women, wins the Nové Město World Cup, they will automatically be nominated to the Olympic Games Team,” USA Cycling said in a news release. “If quota slots remain, then up to one athlete per gender who finishes in second through eighth place will be selected to the team. If more than one athlete meets this, then the highest placed athlete will earn the nomination. If no one automatically qualifies given these criteria, then the selection committee will utilize discretionary selections.”USA Cycling said the window for selection will close May 24, meaning this weekend is the last chance for Blevins and Swenson to make their cases.“Fired up for Sunday,” Blevins said after Friday’s short-track.Under-23Blevins wasn’t the only Durango rider to turn heads moving up a division in Albstadt.Riley Amos, 19, made his under-23 debut and competed for the first time at a UCI World Cup event. He stunned the field with a fifth-place finish in 1:12:23, which was 34 seconds behind Canada’s Carter Woods, 20.Germany’s David List, 22, was second, six seconds behind Woods, and Italy’s Simone Avondetto, 21, was third in 1:12:06.Durango's Riley Amos made his under-23 UCI World Cup debut last weekend in Germany, and he moved up from a fifth-row start position to finish fifth overall as the top 19-year-old in the deep race. Courtesy of Trek Factory RacingCourtesy of Trek Factory RacingAmos was the top-finisher among 19-year-olds in a race with 132 riders total.“Over the moon with what I was able to accomplish today in my first ever World Cup,” Amos said in a post to Instagram.Amos credited the start plan from coach Jim Miller for helping him go from a fifth row start position to the fifth-place finish.“Little bit of luck combined with good legs carried me to the top 10 by the end of the start loop,” Amos said. “From there, just rode consistent and hung onto the front group with everything I had, and had a blast on the descents.”Amos, a Bear National Team rider, wore a special new jersey that was a blend of the Bear team and the Trek Factory Racing team, which is supporting him for his inaugural World Cup season.“It’s been an incredible time and absolutely amazing support to help me perform my best,” Amos said.Durango's Riley Amos is wearing a new jersey that blends the Bear National Team colors, as seen on fellow Durangoan Ruth Holcomb, right, along with those of Trek Factory Racing, which is supporting him during his inaugural UCI World Cup season as a U23 rider. Courtesy of Trek Factory RacingCourtesy of Trek Factory RacingAmos will race Saturday at Nové Město looking to further improve on his world ranking. Also competing in the women’s U23 cross-country race in Germany was Durango’s Savilia Blunk. She finished 28th in 1:17:49. Austria’s Mona Mitterwallner, 19, won in 1:08:02. She was more than 2:30 ahead of second-place Caroline Bohe of Denmark.“Tough race at the opening round of the World Cup,” Blunk said in a post to Instagram. “Was off to a good start in the lead but broke a chain at the top of the first climb. Carried momentum down into the tech zone where I got a new chain, then battled through the field from (last) till I ran out of time.“Of course I’m bummed, but honestly there were a lot of positives to take from today. When you’re 2.5 minutes off the leaders after 6 minutes of racing, it’s so easy to mentally give up, but way too many people have invested in me to be here (including myself), and I’m proud for keeping the fight.”UCI Junior SeriesDurango’s Ruth Holcomb also made the trip for the first two World Cup stops of the year to compete in the UCI Junior Series races in Albstadt and Nové Město. On the notoriously difficult Albstadt course, Holcomb finished 22nd in 1:07:23. She was the top-American finisher in the 51-rider field. The win went to France’s Line Burquier in 59:12, while Switzerland’s Monique Halter was second in 59:48.Durango's Ruth Holcomb wasn't pleased with her finishing position at the first UCI Junior Series race of the season in Albstadt, Germany, but the American star is eager to get back after it Saturday in the Czech Republic. Courtesy of Bear National TeamCourtesy of Bear National Team“After a pretty tough week of finishing school, traveling and back-to-back race weekends, I had a pretty difficult race last weekend in Albstadt,” Holcomb said in a post to Instagram. “While I was pretty disappointed (and) upset by my performance, each one of these races is a great learning experience. At this race in particular, I learned how important it is to have an incredible community around you that will be there even on your worst race days. Beyond thankful for the community behind me and so ready to give it another go this weekend in Nové Město.Holcomb, the fourth-ranked junior women’s rider in the world, and Amos will both be in action Saturday. The elite races will be Sunday and broadcast live streaming on Red Bull TV.jlivingston@durangoherald.com

Rory McIlroy watches his putt on the third hole during the fourth round of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament at Quail Hollow on Sunday, May 9, 2021, in Charlotte, N.C. (AP Photo/Jacob Kupferman)Jacob KupfermanOne of golf’s biggest stars returns to formCHARLOTTE, N.C. – Rory McIlroy finally won when he least expected it, and it was as sweet as he could have imagined.Only after he hung on for a one-shot victory in the Wells Fargo Championship, his first title in 18 months, did he reveal his neck locked up during his final practice session and if not for a late tee time Thursday, he would have had to withdraw. And when he seized control Sunday afternoon with back-to-back birdies from the bunker down the stretch, he started to get ahead of himself thinking how cool it would be to see his wife and 8-month-old daughter waiting to celebrate with him on their first Mother's Day.The finishing stretch at Quail Hollow snapped him back to reality. He hit a 7-iron safely over the water on the 17th, and caddie Harry Diamond wisely talked him into taking a penalty drop from a dangerous lie in a hazard on the closing hole. He two-putted from 45 feet for bogey, a 3-under 68 and a one-shot victory. The moment with Erica and little Poppy was what he imagined. So was that trophy.“It's tough to get over the line, especially if you haven't done it in a while,” McIlroy said, a winner at Quail Hollow for the third time. "It's such a funny week, knowing my game was pretty good and then having my neck lock up on the range and sitting here Sunday night with the trophy.“Just glad I got through it.”Abraham Ancer finished runner-up for the fourth time in his career as he seeks his first title. Ancer wasn't part of the picture until he ran off three straight birdies late that briefly gave him a share of the lead, and nearly closed with a fourth birdie when his 35-foot putt on No. 18 grazed the lip. He shot 66.But this was about McIlroy and the second-longest winless drought of his career, who until this week had not played on the weekend in two months. It was like he never was gone. McIlroy was bogey-free until the final hole, and even when he brought more pressure on himself with a poor tee shot, he delivered an 8-iron from just inside 200 yards to the fat of the green for his two-putt bogey to finish on 10-under 274.His last victory was the HSBC Champions in Shanghai on Nov. 3, 2019. His next start is in two weeks at Kiawah Island for the PGA Championship, where he set the record in 2012 with an eight-shot victory. How's that for timing?“I'm excited going forward now,” McIlroy said. His game is not perfect — he hit only three of 14 fairways in the final round — but he was quick to say a victory brought validation.Locked in a tight race among Keith Mitchell, Gary Woodland and then Ancer, McIlroy delivered the goods on the back nine. He holed a 10-foot par putt on the par-3 13th. He got up-and-down for birdie with splendid bunker shots on the reachable par-4 14th and the par-5 15th.He won for the 19th time on the PGA Tour, and 27th time worldwide.“This is one of my favorite places in the world," said McIlroy, who picked up his first PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow in 2010. “To break the drought and win here, it's awesome.”It was a tough finish for Mitchell, who started the final round with a two-shot lead and quickly stretched it to three shots with a 6-iron out of a fairway bunker into a stiffening breeze to 12 feet for birdie. But his short game let him down all day, leading to bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes that cost him the lead, and on the 14th hole and 15th holes when he had to settle for pars after being in position for birdies.Mitchell needed to finish alone in second to qualify for the PGA Championship through the money list. But he dropped a shot on the 17th and closed with a 72 to tie for third with Viktor Hovland, who had a 67.“Shows you how awesome he is as a player because he didn’t have his best today and he still won and that’s why he’s got majors and a bunch of wins,” Mitchell said.Woodland had a share of the lead early on the back nine until he went through a bad patch of back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13, and settling for pars on the next two scoring holes. He shot 71 and finished fifth.McIlroy could have done without the drama on the 18th. With a two-shot lead, his drive went left of the winding stream into a deep hole of shaggy grass near the water. He started to try to gouge it out toward the fairway when Diamond stepped in to offer a few alternatives. They picked the right one — a penalty drop that limited any chaos, and McIlroy delivered a winner. His 2-foot par putt brought out one of the loudest cheers of a day filled with them. The Wells Fargo Championship had more energy than any tournament since golf returned from the pandemic.Just what McIlroy needed. He thought he would enjoy some quiet of no spectators. It didn't take long for him to realize he missed the energy. “To bring out the best in myself, I needed this," he said. And when it was over, he turned and heaved his golf ball toward the crowd. That felt good, too.Keith Mitchell tees off on the seventh hole during the fourth round of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament at Quail Hollow on Sunday, May 9, 2021, in Charlotte, N.C. (AP Photo/Ashley Landis, File)Ashley LandisNEW YORK – Highly touted Colorado Rockies minor league third baseman Colton Welker was suspended 80 games by the commissioner's office Thursday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The 23-year-old Welker, drafted in 2016 out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, is currently on the roster for Triple-A Albuquerque. His suspension goes into immediate effect and will be without pay.The substance he tested positive for was Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (DHCMT), which is in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. In a statement, Welker said: “I want to make it very clear that I have never willingly nor intentionally ingested any substance to enhance my athletic performance. Given the information provided to me by the players' association and laboratory, the amount detected was so minimal that it would have no effect on enhancing my performance."“I understand that a number of other players, like me, have tested positive for this metabolite at microscopic levels, and I intend to join them in seeking answers as to how this is happening in order to clear my name,” he said. The Rockies said in a statement the organization was “disappointed” to announce the suspension and believes that "Colton will learn from this experience.”Welker was in the running to take over at third for Nolan Arenado after the eight-time Gold Glove winner was traded to St. Louis in the offseason.A fourth-round draft pick, Welker is a .313 career hitter at four minor league levels with 34 homers and 204 RBIs. He’s played mostly third base, but has some appearances at first. This spring, Welker credited his success with a leaner look. He said he dropped about 10 pounds from the year before by cutting out carbs and mixing in more vegetables. As a shortstop growing up, Welker helped lead Marjory Stoneman Douglas High to the state title in 2016. It was a moment of immense pride for the community, which less than two years later was ravaged by the massacre of 17 students, teachers and staff at that same school. Welker routinely works out with Stoneman Douglas players in the offseason.

Brooklyn Nets forward Jeff Green (8) guards against Portland Trail Blazers forward Carmelo Anthony (00) during the second half of a game Friday in New York.Mary Altaffer/Associated Press ATLANTA – Carmelo Anthony looked like he was all done just a couple of seasons ago. Now, he’s part of a truly exclusive club in the NBA. Welcome to the Top 10, Melo. Anthony scored 14 points Monday night in Portland’s 123-114 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, moving him past Elvin Hayes for 10th place on the career scoring list with 27,318. “If you’re in the top 10 of anything of all time, it’s a special moment,” said Anthony, who is in his 18th NBA season and turns 37 before the month is out. Anthony cruised past Hayes early in the second quarter, hitting a 3-pointer while getting fouled by Danilo Gallinari and knocking down the free throw to complete a 4-point play. Anthony was fully aware of how many points he needed to surpass Hayes. “I knew this moment,” he said. “I didn’t know those other moments — 15, 13, 11. But 10 is something I knew.” It appeared Anthony was headed for a forced retirement after he played just 10 games during the 2018-19 season. He parted ways with Houston, was waived by Chicago and didn’t hook up with Portland until the next season was several weeks old. Even though he went more than a year without playing a game, Anthony found new life and a new role with the Trail Blazers. A starter his entire career, he is coming off the bench now, playing a supporting role to younger stars, players who still look up to him, such as Damian Lillard. “Being in the top 10 in a really special accomplishment,” Lillard said. “For him, it’s probably a little more special. A lot of people counted him out and tried to finish him.” During his time with the Trail Blazers, Anthony has passed nine players on the career scoring list. He knocked off Alex English, Kevin Garnett, John Havlicek and Paul Pierce last season. He has taken down Tim Duncan, Dominique Wilkins, Oscar Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon and now Hayes this season. Next up for Anthony: Moses Malone at 27,409 points. Melo’s got a good chance at catching him, too, by the end of the regular season. “For Melo to be out a year and come back makes it even more remarkable,” Portland coach Terry Stotts said. “I always appreciate greatness, whether it’s a player I’m coaching or coaching against. Melo is a great player. He’s a Hall of Fame player.” Lillard went on and on about what a pleasure it’s been to have Anthony as a teammate, disputing those who have described him over the years as a selfish player who was never quite good enough to lead his teams — most notably, Denver and New York — to a championship. “I appreciate him more as a friend than I do as a teammate, and I really appreciate him as a teammate,” Lillard said. “I think that really speaks to the kind of person he is.” Afterward, Stotts presented Anthony with a game ball in the locker room. “We need to acknowledge milestones,” the coach said. “This is a big one. Top 10 of all time. That’s big time.” After his teammates finished clapping, Anthony said: “A couple of years ago, I didn’t think I was gonna be in this moment right now. I was out the league for whatever reason. I’m back. I persevered. I stayed strong, I stayed true to myself and now I’m here in the top 10.” He’s not done yet. “I’m still enjoying the game,” Anthony said. “I’m still loving the game. I’m still approaching the game the same way.”

Massive contract hasn’t paid off for BroncosDenver Broncos offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James has barely seen the field in game action for the team since signing a $51 million contract in 2019.David Zalubowski/Associated Press ENGLEWOOD – A person with knowledge of the injury tells The Associated Press that right tackle Ja’Wuan James sustained a torn Achilles tendon while working out away from the Denver Broncos’ facilities Tuesday. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said James’ $10 million salary for 2021 is in jeopardy because the injury occurred off-site. ESPN first reported James’ injury, which is expected to sideline him for the entire 2021 season. He is among dozens of Broncos and hundreds of NFL players leaguewide who are boycotting voluntary offseason work at team facilities this spring. Players have cited concerns over COVID-19 safety protocols, but also are pushing for a reduced offseason schedule after last year’s virtual offseason led to fewer injuries. Had James gotten hurt at the team’s facilities, his salary would have been covered. James’ injury is sure to be a top talking point as the NFL encourages players to return to team facilities later this month when the offseason program ramps up beyond weight room sessions that are allowed now. Phase 2 beginning May 17 will remain voluntary with virtual meetings but on-field drills will be permitted in advance of a mandatory minicamp. James has only played 63 snaps since signing a four-year, $51 million free agent contract with the Broncos in 2019, which at the time was the highest ever for a right tackle. James missed most of his first season in Denver with a balky knee and opted out in 2020 over coronavirus concerns. The Broncos bypassed available tackles in last weekend’s draft, in part because of James’ expected return to the lineup. “We targeted a few that were taken right before we took them, but it didn’t fall our way,” general manager George Paton said Saturday when asked about not adding a tackle in the draft. “We still feel good about our depth. We’ll continue to look on the market — the free-agent market. I think we’re signing five offensive linemen from college free agency.” The Broncos have had more trouble filling their right tackle spot than they have finding a suitable successor to quarterback Peyton Manning, who retired in 2016. The Broncos have had a different starting right tackle for their opener in each of the past eight seasons. Last year’s fill-in was Elijah Wilkinson, who signed with the Chicago Bears this offseason. Calvin Anderson, who played in every game last season and started twice, is an option to start at right tackle for Denver in 2021. Available free agents include Demar Dotson, who played for the Broncos last season, and former Chiefs All-Pro Mitchell Schwartz, who is coming off back surgery.

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies have appointed Bill Schmidt as their interim general manager after parting ways with Jeff Bridich. Schmidt has been with the team for nearly 22 years and has been in his current role of vice president of scouting since Jan. 2, 2007. Schmidt also was a scout for Cleveland, the New York Yankees, Cincinnati and the Major League Baseball scouting bureau. Colorado plans to begin a search for a permanent general manager following the postseason. Schmidt takes over for Bridich, who recently stepped away as part of an agreement with the team. Schmidt will be in charge of the team’s baseball operations. “After discussions with the baseball department heads, we have come to the conclusion that Bill is the right person for interim GM,” team President Greg Feasel said in a statement Monday. “Bill’s experience and his relationships from top to bottom throughout our organization, including the players, coaches and staff on the field, more than qualify him for this role.” The Rockies announced April 26 that Bridich was stepping away. He was in his seventh season as the team’s GM. The decision ended a tenure that included two playoff appearances and a falling out with Nolan Arenado that culminated with the All-Star third baseman’s offseason trade to St. Louis.

Move makes way to sign a tight endQuarterback Jeff Driskel was released by the Denver Broncos on Monday.Jack dempsey/Associated Press ENGLEWOOD – The Denver Broncos released quarterback Jeff Driskel on Monday when they signed veteran tight end Eric Saubert. Driskel began last season as Drew Lock’s backup and played well in relief during a Week 2 loss at Pittsburgh. He lost his one start the following week, 28-10 to Tampa Bay, and was leapfrogged by Brett Rypien for the No. 2 job the rest of the season. Driskel was at the center of a quarterback quagmire last November when he tested positive for the coronavirus after the team’s four quarterbacks had spent a day off together maskless. Lock, Rypien and Blake Bortles were disqualified that weekend and the Broncos had to start a rookie practice squad receiver Kendall Hinton in a game against New Orleans with zero practice squad reps. Hinton completed a single pass and Denver lost 31-3, the low point of a 5-11 season that stretched the Broncos’ playoff drought to a half decade. Driskel completed 35 of 64 passes (54.7%) for 432 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in his one season in Denver. The Broncos acquired veteran QB Teddy Bridgewater from the Carolina Panthers last week and general manager George Paton bypassed quarterbacks in the draft. Paton said Bridgewater and Lock will compete for the starting job this summer. There is also speculation the Broncos will try to pry disgruntled MVP Aaron Rodgers out of Green Bay. Another position Paton didn’t address in the draft was tight end. Enter Saubert, a well-traveled, fifth-year player who has appeared in 40 games during his four seasons in Atlanta (2017-18), Chicago (2019) and Jacksonville (2020).

Colorado finding a rhythm once more SAN JOSE, Calif. – Andre Burakovsky scored 41 seconds into overtime and the Colorado Avalanche gained ground in the race for first place in the West Division by rallying past the San Jose Sharks 5-4 on Monday night. “It was a really big one at the end here,” Burakovsky said. “We want to be in first place. This was a must win for us ... Even though we were down there was no doubt. We just found a way to get it done. It was fun to play and fun to watch.” Martin Jones got a piece of Burakovsky’s shot but it trickled past him into the net for the game-winner. Colorado scored three times in the third period to overcome a pair of two-goal deficits and got the tying goal from Nazim Kadri with 3:39 to play. “I loved our response in the third period,” coach Jared Bednar said. “Just the heightened sense of urgency and a little bit of desperation in our game.” Mikko Rantanen scored his 29th goal of the season and Valeri Nichushkin and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for the Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer made 23 saves. Colorado moved within two points of first-place Vegas with a game in hand after the Golden Knights lost 6-5 to Minnesota. Evander Kane scored twice and Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier also scored for San Jose. Jones made 26 saves. The Sharks lost for the 11th time in 13 games and were officially eliminated from playoff contention. This is the third time in franchise history that they missed playoffs in back-to-back years, also doing it in 1992 and ‘93, and in 1996 and ‘97. “You don’t flip things around in this league in six months or eight months or 10 months. It takes time,” coach Bob Boughner said. “There’s some pain involved in that and some growing to do. That’s where we’re at. ... It’s a little disappointing not to be in the playoffs. But we know what the big picture looks like and where we’re going.” San Jose appeared in control after scoring twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. But Nichushkin scored early in the period to make it a one-goal game and Landeskog made it 4-3 after Meier scored for San Jose. A turnover by Brent Burns set up Kadri’s game-tying goal that ended a 19-game stretch without a goal and then Burakovsky won it in overtime. “It’s tough to see the way that game ended,” Boughner said. “I thought we should have been celebrating two points tonight.” FLIP THE SCRIPT The Avalanche came into the game with a league-best goal differential in the second period of plus-33. But the Sharks dominated the frame with Hertl scoring off a turnover and Kane on a breakaway. San Jose outshot Colorado 13-2 in the period, holding the Avalanche to their fewest shots in any period since they had one in the second period against St. Louis on Oct. 21, 2019. COVID-19 LIST Avalanche backup goalie Devan Dubnyk was added to the COVID-19 list before the game after testing positive. Dubnyk will quarantine for two weeks at his house in the San Jose area that he still has after being traded from the Sharks last month. Jonas Johansson suited up as the backup goalie. Grubauer returned after missing more than two weeks on the COVID-19 list last week for Colorado. UP NEXT The teams finish the season series on Wednesday in San Jose. Colorado is 6-1 in the season series including three in a stretch of four in a row against the Sharks.

Anthony Davis comes up big in crunch time LOS ANGELES – Anthony Davis came up with a huge game when the Los Angeles Lakers needed it the most. Davis scored 25 points and had key plays on both ends of the floor in the final minute as the short-handed Lakers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 93-89 victory over the Denver Nuggets Monday night. The Lakers — who had lost six of their last seven going into the game — won without two key pieces. LeBron James did not play in the second game of a back-to-back after he ankle soreness during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss Toronto. Dennis Schröder will be out more than a week after entering the NBA’s health and safety protocol. “I know with LeBron and Dennis out the team counts on me more. I made the effort to come out and play with pace,” Davis said. “It was good to see us play our style of basketball. We have to feed off this game.” This was Davis’ seventh game back since he missed more than two months with a strained right calf, but the first where coach Frank Vogel said that the All-Star forward has been decisive on offense and defense. “He’s getting more and more in rhythm each game and getting his legs under him. He’s at his best when he’s assertive on both sides of the floor,” Vogel said. The Lakers led by 14 points midway through the fourth quarter before the Nuggets got within 89-87 with a late rally. Davis hit a jumper with 41.8 seconds remaining to give the Lakers a four-point lead. Nikola Jokic hit a pair of free throws to cut it in half but Talen Horton-Tucker hit a reverse layup with 15.1 seconds left to push the advantage up to 93-89. After a Denver timeout, Davis blocked Facundo Campazzo’s 3-point attempt to end any hopes of a Nuggets’ comeback and end their five-game winning streak. “We were running pick-and-roll, just trying to open up the floor. I made a shot that I shoot all the time — going left and hit a floater,” Davis said. “On the block, I was trying to read where the pass was going from Jokic and tried to contest the shot.” Jokic led the Nuggets with 32 points and Michael Porter Jr. added 19. “We had a chance. The problem is we didn’t shoot well,” Jokic said. “They are a good team. It is not a shame to lose to a good team.” The game had impact in respects to the third thru seventh seeds in the Western Conference. Denver (43-22) fell back into a tie with the LA Clippers for the third seed while the Lakers (37-28) are half-game in front of Dallas and one game ahead of Portland for the fifth spot. “Tonight was an ugly game. The Lakers were in a funk and they pulled it out. We have to find a way to get healthy when he get home,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. Los Angeles was up by five going into the fourth quarter when it started period on a 13-4 run with Wesley Matthews leading the way with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. The Nuggets trailed 87-73 with 6:09 remaining when they rallied with a 14-2 run. Porter Jr. had nine points, including a running layup to get them within a basket with 1:37 remaining, and Jokic supplied the other five. The Nuggets led most of the first half, but the Lakers closed the second quarter on an 11-3 run, including six points by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, to go into halftime with a 45-42 advantage. A pair of Jokic free throws gave the Nuggets a 56-55 lead midway through the third quarter when the Lakers responded with a 9-2 spurt to go up by six. TIP INS Nuggets: G PJ Dozier was injured in early in the fourth quarter. He was taken to the locker room with left hip tightness and did not return. ... With Portland’s loss, Denver is assured of finishing in the top six in the conference and will not have to worry about the Play-In Tournament. ... JaVale McGee received his 2020 NBA champions ring from the Lakers before the game. McGee signed with Cleveland during the offseason and was traded to Denver on March 25. This was his first trip back to Staples Center this season. He had eight of his 10 points in the second quarter. Lakers: Marc Gasol, who had not played in two of the past three games, entered in the second half and played 17 minutes. He had 10 points with all three of his field goals coming from the perimeter. ... Alex Caruso started for the second straight game and scored 11 points. UP NEXT Nuggets: Host the Knicks on Wednesday. Lakers: Will be the visiting team against the Clippers at Staples Center on Thursday.

DENVER – Nathan MacKinnon bounced back from a rare scoreless night with a goal and an assist to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. MacKinnon had his 15-game points streak ended Friday night and failed to get a shot on goal for the first time in 264 games. He made up for that with his 20th goal on one of nine shots for him. “He made some things happen,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “A couple of the faceoff things we had drawn up got us goals. It was just smart execution. He shot the puck pretty well. It looked like he was a little snake bit, but once he got that one he got a couple more (good chances).” Mikko Rantanen scored his 28th of the season and added an assist for Colorado and Devan Dubnyk stopped 22 shots against his former team. Alexander Barabanov and Tomas Hertl had a goal and an assist each, Logan Couture also scored and rookie goaltender Josef Korenar had 40 saves for the Sharks. San Jose fell further behind in the chase for the last playoff spot in the West Division. “He kept us in the game. He was probably our best player for a majority of the night,” Couture said of Korenar said. “It could have been a lot more than the four that they got. We made it a game at the end but I wish we would have helped him out a little more.” The Sharks went more than seven periods and 145 minutes, 32 seconds, without a goal against Colorado but that ended when Barabanov beat Dubnyk with a power-play at 4:25 of the second period to give San Jose a 1-0 lead. MacKinnon’s tip at 13:08 tied it at 1-1 and Burakovsky gave the Avalanche the lead 2:58 later when he scored off of a faceoff, his 15th of the season. Patrik Nemeth gave Colorado a two-goal cushion with his third of the season and first since coming over in a trade with Detroit at 9:05 of the third. “Cale (Makar) made a great play, drew a guy to him and I had an open lane and just took a shot,” Nemeth said. “It was a good play by him to create some movement there.” Couture’s 17th of the season, a short-handed goal 50 seconds later, made it a one-goal game again. Rantanen made it 4-2 at 15:34 and with Korenar off for an extra skater Hertl scored at 17:47. It was his 16th. “It was unfortunate we couldn’t get at least a point,” Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. “I thought (Korenar) made some big saves, especially the last 10 minutes of the second period. He was fighting to get through on some traffic on those two point-shot goals in the third period. He’s battling hard and fighting hard.” DOWN TWO Colorado played without two of its top six defensemen on Saturday night. In the first period Ryan Graves took an inadvertent elbow to the head from Evander Kane on Friday night and Samuel Girard went skates first into the boards in the third period. Bednar said after the game Girard will be out approximately two weeks with a lower-body injury and Graves is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury. The Avalanche recalled Dan Renouf and Kyle Burroughs from the Colorado Eagles of the AHL, and they skated as the third defensive pairing. SAME GAME, DIFFERENT ARENA The home-and-home, four-game series between these two teams continues with two more in San Jose, Monday and Wednesday night.

Bats come to life in Arizona PHOENIX – Dom Nuñez hit a grand slam, Trevor Story had three hits that included a two-run homer and the Colorado Rockies pounded out 18 hits in a 14-6 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. It was a good start to May for the Rockies, who had the most losses in the National League during April with a 9-17 record. The top three hitters in Colorado’s lineup all had good nights: Raimel Tapia had four singles and scored two runs, Story added a double to go with his homer and Ryan McMahon had two hits and four RBIs, including the go-ahead, two-run single in the fourth. Arizona starter Zac Gallen (1-1) needed 93 pitches to get through four innings. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven. McMahon’s error on a grounder was part of the reason the Diamondbacks scored a pair or runs in the third and pushed ahead 2-1, but the third baseman made up for the miscue the very next inning. The left-handed McMahon sliced a two-out single to the opposite field, scoring Tapia and Story to give the Rockies a 4-2 lead. The Diamondbacks pulled to 4-3 on Carson Kelly’s RBI single, but Story responded in the sixth with his two-run homer. Story was out in front of Caleb Smith’s changeup on a 2-2 count, but reached out and pulled the ball down the left-field line. The liner just cleared the wall, landing in the Arizona bullpen. After Nuñez smacked his eighth-inning grand slam off Matt Peacock to make it 14-5, the Diamondbacks turned to infielder Asdrúbal Cabrera on the mound. Another infielder, Wyatt Mathisen, made his first career pitching appearance in the ninth. Mathisen threw one pitch that registered 46 mph, but still threw a scoreless inning. Peacock had a particularly rough outing, giving up seven earned runs in one-third of an inning. Austin Gomber (2-3) gave the Rockies a solid outing, allowing four runs — two earned — over six innings. He permitted five hits and one walk and struck out four. Andy Young had a pinch-hit solo homer for the Diamondbacks in the sixth, and Kelly brought home a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. But every time the Diamondbacks chipped away at the lead, the Rockies responded — and Nuñez’s grand slam ended any suspense. NEARING 300 Arizona’s fifth-year manager, Torey Lovullo, needs one more win to reach 300 with the team. He’d be the fourth manager in club history to hit the mark: Kirk Gibson (353), Bob Melvin (337) and Bob Brenly (303) are all in the club. TRAINER’S ROOM Rockies: Put RHP Antonio Senzatela on the 10-day injured list with a right groin strain. The move is retroactive to Friday. The team called up LHP Lucas Gilbreath from its alternate training site. UP NEXT The teams play the finale of their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. The Diamondbacks will send RHP Merrill Kelly (2-2, 6.33 ERA) to the mound to face Colorado RHP Chi Chi González (1-0, 3.60).

No QB pick could haunt him, though ENGLEWOOD – George Paton spent almost a quarter-century preparing to run his own NFL draft, and the first-time general manager spackled several of the Denver Broncos’ roster cracks with his inaugural class. What he didn’t directly address was his most pressing need: For the third time in five years, the Broncos had a top-10 pick and didn’t select a quarterback. Skirting Justin Fields and Mac Jones in Round 1 after Trey Lance went off the board leaves Paton open to carping from a flustered fan base that’s grown weary of middling QBs in the five long years since Peyton Manning retired. That exasperation will only ease if one of three things transpires: — Teddy Bridgewater, acquired from Carolina for a fourth round pick on Wednesday, rediscovers his Minnesota mojo after an unsuccessful season with the Panthers. — Drew Lock puts aside Denver’s acquisition of Bridgewater and offseason interest in Matt Stafford and Deshaun Watson and morphs into an accurate ace after an awful 2020 season. —The Packers have a change of heart and send reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers out west, where his fiancée, Shailene Woodley, has a home in Boulder about 30 miles from Empower Field. Maybe all three of those scenarios are long shots, but Paton did bolster his offense, pad his defense and stock his special teams with his maiden draft class. “It was everything I’d imagined, there really were no surprises,” Paton said. Other than his own: not drafting a quarterback. But he insists he’s fine with what he has. “I like our room right now,” Paton said. “Teddy and Drew, they’re going to have a great competition.” Paton’s first draft began with his surprising selection of Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II with the ninth overall pick. He added versatile linebacker Baron Browning of Ohio State in the third round. He grabbed bruising North Carolina running back Javonte Williams in the second round and picked up a potential gem in Quinn Meinerz, a guard from Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater in Round 3. Paton used five of his six selections Saturday on defense, beginning with fifth-round safeties Caden Sterns of Texas and Jamar Johnson of Indiana. In the sixth round, the Broncos selected Auburn wide receiver and special teams ace Seth Williams. In the seventh, Denver took LSU cornerback Kary Vincent Jr., and defensive ends Jonathon Cooper of Ohio State and Marquiss Spencer of Mississippi State. Seven of Denver’s 10 selections were on defense, but coach Vic Fangio said that wasn’t by design; it just fell that way. What was a driver in Saturday’s selections was beefing up special teams. “Tom McMahon, our special teams coordinator, evaluated just about every player in the draft, so we targeted players that he liked,” Paton said. It’s not just the Day 3 picks who will be making their mark in the kicking game. While the Broncos don’t know whether Browning will play inside or outside linebacker — or both like he did at Ohio State — they’re sure of one thing: “We know the minute he walks in the door, he’s going to be a hardcore special teamer,” Paton said. Other takeaways from Denver’s first draft class in a decade that wasn’t assembled by franchise icon John Elway: STACKED SECONDARY The Broncos selected four defensive backs after signing cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller in free agency. “That will be a competitive position group this training camp, for sure,” Fangio said. STEALTH BOMBER Paton may be a novice GM but he pulled off the biggest surprise at the top of Round 1 by selecting Surtain when many mocks had him picking a quarterback. Paton was just starting his NFL career as a pro scouting director in Miami when Surtain’s father, Patrick Surtain Sr., was embarking on his 11-year NFL career. “We’ve been watching this kid for three years,” Paton said. “I knew the family; I knew the dad and I knew where he came from. We tried to hide our interest a little bit.” Or a lot. “I never spoke with Pat. I never Zoomed with him. I told our coaches don’t call him. I told our scouts don’t call, don’t Zoom,” Paton said. “I didn’t go to the Alabama pro day.” HOOSIER DADDY Johnson was the first Hoosiers safety selected first-team All-Big Ten since Eric Allen in 1996. He had four interceptions in eight games and picked off Fields twice in Indiana’s 42-35 loss to Ohio State in November. “That game was really important for me and my career,” said Johnson.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – John Velazquez was in a familiar place, in the lead aboard Medina Spirit in the Kentucky Derby and holding off the stretch bid of three challengers. This time, Bob Baffert couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Medina Spirit won by a half-length on Saturday, giving Baffert his seventh victory, the most of any trainer in the race’s 147-year history. The jockey and trainer — both Hall of Famers — teamed up eight months ago to win a pandemic-delayed Derby in September with Authentic, who raced to an early lead and hung on. That wasn’t so surprising. This one was. Sent off at 12-1 — astronomical odds for a colt trained by the white-haired, two-time Triple Crown winner — Medina Spirit was in a street fight thundering down the stretch. The dark brown colt was pressed by Mandaloun on his outside. Hot Rod Charlie was coming fast outside of Mandaloun, with 5-2 favorite Essential Quality giving chase on the far outside. “I kept waiting for all those horses to pass him,” Baffert said. “When he got to the eighth pole, we said, ‘This guy has got a shot.’” Velazquez knew he had plenty of horse left. “We got to the 16th pole and he put his ears down and kept fighting,” the jockey said. “I was so proud of him.” In the paddock, Baffert watched in amazement as one of the least heralded Derby runners of his long career dug in at the front. “You could tell he was laying it down and Johnny was riding hard,” Baffert said. “He was just relentless.” Medina Spirit led all the way and ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.02. He paid $26.20, $12 and $7.60. The victory was worth $1.86 million. Velazquez earned his fourth Derby victory aboard the colt that was purchased as a yearling for $1,000 and was a bargain-basement buy at $35,000 for current owner Amr Zedan of Saudi Arabia. By comparison, Zedan recently paid $1.7 million for an unraced 2-year-old. “He doesn’t know how much he cost,” Baffert said, “but what a little racehorse.” Baffert punched his right arm in the air after watching the finish on the video board. He was buried in celebratory hugs by his wife, Jill, and youngest son, Bode. Jill Baffert had reason to celebrate earlier, when a horse she co-owns and is trained by her husband won a $500,000 race on the undercard. “I’m really, really surprised,” the 68-year-old trainer said of Medina Spirit. It wasn’t false modesty. Baffert had been low-key about his chances after two of his best horses — Life Is Good and Concert Tour — were derailed along the Derby trail. Medina Spirit isn’t the typical high-priced talent with a fancy pedigree in Baffert’s California barn. “I cannot believe he won this race,” the trainer said. “That little horse, that was him, all guts. He’s always shown that he’s been an overachiever. His heart is bigger than his body.” Medina Spirit has never finished worse than second in six career starts and two of his three losses came to Life Is Good, who likely would have been the Derby favorite had he not been injured. “I’ve rehearsed this speech in the shower and treadmill,” Zedan said. “Never thought I was going to do it, but here I am.” Medina Spirit broke sharply out of the gate while Essential Quality and 9-2 second choice Rock Your World bumped shortly after the start. “We were done,” Rock Your World’s trainer John Sadler said. “No chance.” Essential Quality was five horses wide in both the first and second turns before taking aim at Medina Spirit in the stretch and coming up short in fourth place. “He didn’t get the greatest trip,” trainer Brad Cox said of the favorite. “That can happen when you start from the 14-hole.” Mandaloun — Cox’s other entry — finished second and returned $23.00 and $13.40. Hot Rod Charlie, partly owned by five former Brown University football players, was another half-length back in third and paid $5.20 to show. Trainer Todd Pletcher saddled four runners, with his highest finish being ninth with Known Agenda. Sainthood was 11th, Bourbonic 13th and Dynamic One 18th. Baffert won back-to-back, having tied Ben Jones with his sixth victory last year when the race was run in September without spectators because of the coronavirus pandemic. “The seven wins? I can’t believe I won two,” Baffert said. “That’s what I love about this business: Nobody knows for sure.” A week earlier, Baffert sat in front of the Arkansas Racing Commission appealing a 15-day suspension that was part of his punishment for a pair of drug positives involving two of his horses from May 2020. He was successful, with the commission voting unanimously to reduce his fines and overturn the suspension. “I’m just so grateful I can still compete at this level,” Baffert said. Velazquez became the first jockey to win consecutive Derbies since Victor Espinoza in 2014-15. The 49-year-old rider also completed the Kentucky Oaks-Derby double for the first time since Calvin Borel in 2009, winning the $1 million race for fillies on Friday. Velazquez had told Baffert a night earlier not to underestimate Medina Spirit, named for the second holiest city in Islam and capital of the Medina province in Saudi Arabia. “Every time I asked him for a little more, he gave me more,” Velazquez said. The Derby went off on a sun-splashed day with attendance of 51,838 — about 100,000 fewer than usual. Fans were told to wear masks inside the track, but plenty of them did not. O Besos finished fifth, followed by Midnight Bourbon, Keepmeinmind, Helium and Known Agenda. Highly Motivated was 10th, ahead of Sainthood, Like The King, Bourbonic, Hidden Stash, Brooklyn Strong, Super Stock, Rock Your World, Dynamic One and Soup and Sandwich.

Arizona Diamondbacks’ Madison Bumgarner delivers a pitch against the Colorado Rockies during the first inning Friday in Phoenix.Darry Webb/Associated Press PHOENIX – Madison Bumgarner followed his seven-inning no-hitter by allowing one run over five innings and sparked a four-run, third-inning rally with a single to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Colorado Rockies 7-2 on Friday night. Bumgarner (3-2) fell behind in the first inning when Trevor Story doubled on his 11th pitch and C.J. Cron followed with an RBI single. The 31-year-old left-hander gave up only two more hits, both singles, in his final four innings and won his third straight start. He walked one and struck out six — including the side in the fifth — and left after 81 pitches. “He made pitches and kept everything manageable,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said of Bumgarner. “He was under the weather a little bit. There was no potential for him to miss the start. I felt like he emptied his tank in the fifth inning. He’s fine. He’s going to be fine. We were a hundred percent certain it was a non-COVID situation.” Last Sunday, Bumgarner faced the minimum 21 batters — the only Braves runner who reached came on an error — in 7-0, seven-inning victory at Atlanta in the second game of a doubleheader. The game didn’t officially count as a no-no. Under a 1991 ruling by Major League Baseball’s eight-man committee on statistical accuracy, a no-hitter is defined as a game of nine or more innings that ended with no hits. “Honestly, I was pretty happy with the way it went,” Bumgarner said. “Going into it I was a little nervous about how it was going to be. I’ve been kind of beat up, got some allergy stuff or whatever going around. It kind of took its toll.” MadBum has given up two runs in his last 17 innings over three starts. “There is finish to his pitches,” Lovullo said. “There is a lot of conviction, and he is landing them. Bum deserves all the credit. He goes out there and executes. He is starting to command the ball on both sides of the plate.” Josh Rojas homered for the second straight game and Asdrúbal Cabrera had two hits and two RBIs for Arizona, which has won five of six and nine of 11. Jon Gray (3-2) gave up five runs — four earned — and nine hits in six innings. Colorado dropped to 1-10 on the road and 4-14 against the NL West. After Bumgarner’s single, Arizona took a 4-1 lead on Cabrera’s two-out, RBI double, run-scoring singles by David Peralta and Eduardo Escobar and a run-scoring throwing error by third baseman Josh Fuentes. Rojas homered in the eighth against Jordan Sheffield. “NO-NO” TICKET DEAL The Diamondbacks offered $14 tickets for the Friday and Saturday games to commemorate the 14 scoreless innings thrown by Bumgarner and Zac Gallen in Sunday’s sweep. A 300 GAME Trey Lovullo improved to 299-273 and is on the verge on becoming the fourth Arizona manager to reach 300. Kirk Gibson was 353-376 in four-plus seasons, Bob Melvin was 337-340 in four-plus seasons and Bob Brenly was 303-262 in three-plus seasons. TRAINER’S ROOM Rockies: INF Brendan Rodgers (hamstring) did running drills Thursday and Friday, and manager Bud Black called his progress encouraging. ... RHP Yency Almonte (bruised hand) is working on his mechanics while with team on the road, Black said. Diamondbacks: OF/IF Ketel Marte (hamstring) went through running and hitting progressions and took batting practice Friday. “It’s still going to be a little bit of time” before he returns, general manager Mike Hazen said. ... 1B Christian Walker (oblique) and OF Tim Locastro (finger) are expected to play in intrasquad games at the alternate site Saturday and could rejoin the team for a trip that begins Tuesday in Miami. UP NEXT Arizona RHP Zac Gallen (1-0, 2.16 ERA) will oppose Colorado LHP Austin Gomber (1-3, 6.65) on Saturday in the third game of a four-game series.

Saturday climb an opportunity for podiumDurango’s Sepp Kuss will have a chance to climb his way onto the podium at the Tour de Romandie on Saturday during a big climbing stage in cold temperatures. He currently is in ninth place overall, 21 seconds behind the lead and 14 seconds off the podium.Courtesy of Team Jumbo-Visma Sepp Kuss stayed hot on a cold day in Switzerland. Kuss navigated wet pavement, tricky descents and punchy climbs to finish eighth Friday during the third stage of the Tour de Romandie. That moved the Durango cyclist from 11th overall to ninth. Rohan Dennis of the INEOS Grenadiers team crashed with only 10 miles remaining in the 105-mile stage to fall out of the lead. The stage win went to Marc Soler of the Movistar team, who attacked to claim a 22-second victory after the final three circuits around Estavayer. Magnus Cort finished second alongside Stage 1 winner Peter Sagan, who was third. Kuss is now 21 seconds behind the lead of Soler and only 14 seconds off the podium. “It was a very tough stage. The weather conditions were not great: rain all day and about (46 degrees). We saw a strong Sepp today,” said Team Jumbo-Visma director Jans Boven in a news release. Geraint Thomas of INEOS, the 2018 Tour de France winner, is second ahead of teammate Richie Porte, who took third at last year’s Tour de France. They are both 14 seconds behind Soler. Kuss will be in his element Saturday on a 100-mile mountain stage that features two Category 1 climbs and a summit finish. The start of the fourth stage was moved up in anticipation of cold temperatures and even snow in the forecast. While the Movistar and INEOS teams will look to control the pace to maintain podium standing, Kuss will get a chance to put in a big attack on the final climb to try to work his way onto the podium, himself. Sunday’s final stage is a short time trial. jlivingston@durangoherald.com

North Carolina star known for breaking tacklesNorth Carolina running back Javonte Williams impressed the Denver Broncos during his pro day, and Denver moved up to draft him in the second round of the draft Friday night.Gerry Broome/Associated Press ENGLEWOOD – The Denver Broncos traded up in the second round of the NFL draft Friday to grab bruising North Carolina running back Javonte Williams with the third selection of the day. The Broncos entered Round 2 with the 40th overall selection. They gave up their fourth round pick (No. 114) to the Falcons to move up five spots and grab one of the players they viewed as a first-round talent and one who can beef up their thin backfield. Williams was the third runner to come off the board after Najee Harris of Alabama and Travis Etienne from Clemson were selected in the first round. “I definitely feel like I was the best running back in the draft,” Williams said. “Just having to sit there through the first round yesterday was hard.” The Broncos recently let Phillip Lindsay go to the Houston Texans after he struggled in 2020 to provide a solid 1-2 punch with starter Melvin Gordon. The Falcons also sent a sixth round pick to Denver in the deal.North Carolina running back Javonte Williams was known for breaking tackles as a Tar Heel. Now, he will look to do that in the NFL for the Denver Broncos.Gerry Broome/Associated Press Earlier Friday, the Broncos exercised linebacker Bradley Chubb’s fifth-year option and introduced their first-round draft pick, ex-Alabama cornerback and SEC Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II. He’s the son of three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain Sr., who played in Miami when Denver general manager George Paton was working for the Dolphins two decades ago. Paton indicated that he had hoped all along to select Surtain even as most mock drafts had the Broncos grabbing a quarterback in the first round. “We’ve been watching this kid for three years,” Paton said. “I knew the family; I knew the dad and I knew where he came from. We tried to hide our interest a little bit. I never spoke with Pat. I never Zoomed with him. I told our coaches don’t call him. I told our scouts don’t call, don’t Zoom. I didn’t go to the Alabama pro day.” It was all by design to catch everyone by surprise. “This is a kid we targeted. This is a kid we wanted,” Paton said. “We were very fortunate that he was there, and we took him.” Paton called the versatile Surtain, who won 36 of his 38 starts with the Crimson Tide, a perfect fit for head coach Vic Fangio’s defense in a loaded AFC West division that features three of the league’s highest octane offenses. Surtain doesn’t fit the mold of today’s bold, brash talking cornerback but he does exude a quiet confidence, suggesting, “I think I have what it takes to be an elite corner in this league.” Surtain said he’ll continue letting his play speak for itself.

Arizona Diamondbacks’ relief pitcher Stefan Crichton, right, celebrates with catcher Stephen Vogt after a win against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday in Phoenix.Matt York/Associated Press PHOENIX – Caleb Smith doesn’t mind admitting he was angry at being pulled from Arizona’s starting rotation after one ineffective start at the beginning of the season. In fact, he still is. But instead of moping, he got better. Now he’s among the reasons the Diamondbacks are suddenly playing good baseball. Smith was one of five Arizona relievers who threw a scoreless inning on Thursday night, which allowed Arizona time to rally for a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. After a 5-10 start to the season, the D-backs are now 13-12. “Anything they want me to do, I’ll do,” Smith said. “And I’ll do it with a smile — well maybe not a smile on my face — but to the best of my ability. And I won’t complain about it.” The Rockies built a 3-0 lead by the third inning after Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story and Ryan McMahon all had run-scoring hits. But the Diamondbacks responded with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to tie the game. Josh Rojas’ solo homer to right field — his second of the season — cut the D-backs’ deficit to 3-2. Arizona’s decisive rally came in the seventh when Eduardo Escobar tripled into the right-center gap, scoring Josh VanMeter. David Peralta followed with a single that brought home Escobar, and the D-backs had their final 5-3 margin. Arizona right-hander Luke Weaver lasted just four innings, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks. But the D-backs’ bullpen was excellent: Chris Devenski, Taylor Clarke, Smith (2-1), Kevin Ginkel and Stefan Crichton all pitched a scoreless inning. “These guys came out on the attack,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “I could feel it in the dugout.” Smith stuck out the side in the seventh. He had about as good of an inning as a reliever can have: 13 pitches, nine swinging strikes, three strikeouts and a zero on the scoreboard. The left-hander said he watched some tape from his more successful 2019 season that gave him a few hints on how to improve his performance. Smith said that while he was mad about the decision to move him to the bullpen, he also understood. He didn’t throw the ball particularly well during spring training and gave up four runs in three innings during his only start. “If you take it negatively and mope around, you’re not any help to the team,” Smith said. Since his move to the bullpen, Smith has given up just one run over 12 2/3 innings while striking out 16. Crichton earned his third save. Colorado’s Robert Stephenson (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs, including one earned, in the seventh. Arizona finished with 12 hits. “You saw the Diamondbacks throw five guys and they each put up a zero,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “We threw three guys, Stephenson got nicked, and that’s the ball game.” ADDING ADAMS The Rockies selected the contract of veteran first baseman Matt Adams from the team’s alternate training site. The 32-year-old was signed by Colorado in late March. He’s a career .259 hitter with 118 homers and 397 RBIs in stints with St. Louis, Washington and Atlanta. To make room on the roster, the Rockies optioned outfielder Sam Hilliard to their alternate training site. They also designated right-hander Ashton Goudeau for assignment. Goudeau was claimed off waivers by the Rockies in April from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Adams came into the game as a pinch hitter in the ninth but struck out looking to end the game. TRAINER’S ROOM Diamondbacks: Devenski (restricted list) was added back to the roster after three outings at the alternate site. Devenski left the team shortly after opening day because of personal issues. He gave up two runs over two innings in his first two outings of the season before his absence. ... The team optioned RHP Yoan Lopez to the alternate site to make room for Devenski. Lopez had a 6.30 ERA in 11 appearances. UP NEXT The Rockies and Diamondbacks meet for the second game of the four-game series on Friday night. Colorado will send RHP Jon Gray (3-1, 2.54 ERA) to the mound. He’ll face Arizona LHP Madison Bumgarner (2-2, 6.31), who is making his first appearance since throwing a seven-inning no-hitter against the Braves on Sunday.

Lance the big move for 49ers at No. 3 No suspense at the top of this NFL draft: Quarterback, quarterback and, yep, quarterback. With fans in attendance, prospects on hand and Commissioner Roger Goodell dispensing greetings to players being selected Thursday night, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence went to the Jacksonville Jaguars to get things started. Next was BYU’s Zach Wilson going to the New York Jets, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance landing with the San Francisco 49ers. That matched 1971 (Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning, Dan Pastorini) and 1999 (Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith) as the only drafts with quarterbacks taken with the top three picks. Only Plunkett won a Super Bowl among those QBs, and he didn’t do it with New England, which drafted him. Two more passers went in the top 15: Ohio State’s Justin Fields to Chicago, which traded up to the 11th slot with the Giants, and Alabama’s Mac Jones to New England. Lawrence, a junior who led Clemson to a national title, generally is considered the best prospect at the position since Andrew Luck in 2012. He joins new coach Urban Meyer, himself a major success in the college ranks, in trying to turn around a franchise that went 1-15 last season. “I’m just pumped,” Lawrence said. “The best is yet to come. “I don’t what the point is ... if you don’t expect to win every week. I’m going to bring the same mindset.” The mindset in Cleveland was positive simply because there were 12 prospects (not Lawrence) and thousands of fans — including, according to the league, fully vaccinated folks near the stage — joining Goodell on the shore of Lake Erie. Last year’s draft, scheduled for Las Vegas, was instead a totally remote affair because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps emboldened by successfully finishing the 2020 season on time and then staging the playoffs and Super Bowl without a hitch during the pandemic, the NFL targeted the draft as an opportunity to embrace some normalcy in America’s biggest sport. It also has used the event to support vaccinations for COVID-19 and, for the second consecutive spring, as a Draft-a-Thon raising money for a variety of causes. Goodell received plenty of kudos for his hosting of last year’s draft in casual wear from his home. On Thursday night, dressed in a suit, he lauded the folks who sit in the seats. “We all agree over the past season, one thing we missed the most was all our fans,” Goodell said. “And we can’t wait to have all of you back in First Energy Stadium and every stadium across the league this season.” Wilson was expected to go to New York, which hasn’t had a franchise QB since Joe Namath and traded incumbent Sam Bradford to Carolina this month to clear a path for Wilson. “When a team isn’t doing super well and you can go in there and actually be a key piece to actually flip that organization around, I think that’s so special,” Wilson said. “I’m so excited, along with this new coaching staff, to go in there and try and do the best that we can to flip this thing around.” Lance was something of a surprise at No. 3. He played only 17 games for his FCS school, but his offseason workouts sold San Francisco. “It was awesome getting to know coach Shanahan a little bit,” Lance said. “He is an awesome dude and what he has done on the field speaks for itself.” Florida tight end Kyle Pitts, considered by many the best athlete in this draft, went fourth to Atlanta, followed by wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase of LSU, who sat out last season, to Cincinnati. The first player from national champion Alabama off the board, on their way to tying a first-round record, was wideout Jaylen Waddle to Miami, where he will be reunited with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. “J-Dub. Yessir!” Tagovailoa said with a laugh. “We’re going to do our best to try to make plays,” Waddle said, “and hopefully we can make it happen and try to be part of something special.” The first offensive lineman was tackle Penei Sewell of Oregon, taken by Detroit. The SEC and, naturally, the Crimson Tide, were particularly popular. Of the six SEC players chosen in the top 10, three were from Alabama: Waddle, cornerback Patrick Surtain II to Denver, and Heisman Trophy-winning receiver DeVonta Smith to Philadelphia, which traded up with division rival Dallas, of all teams. The others were Pitts, Chase and cornerback Jaycee Horn of South Carolina to the Panthers. By the 17th slot, Alabama had five players chosen, with tackle Alex Leatherwood headed to Las Vegas. And when running back Najee Harris was selected by Pittsburgh, the Tide had, uh, tied the Miami Hurricanes’ mark of six first-rounders set in 2004. After the Eagles-Cowboys deal, Chicago moved up from No. 20 and thrilled its fans by choosing Fields. “I feel like I know myself, I know how much work I’ve put in the game,” Fields said. “I know how much I love the game. I know how much I want to be great. It just comes a point in time when you have to cut all that criticism out.” Dallas got some needed defensive help with Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons, and a third straight Big Ten player went 13th when the Chargers took Northwestern tackle Rashawn Slater. Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert has to be smiling at the added protection he will receive. The Jets became the first club with a second selection when they traded up from No. 23 to Minnesota’s 14th spot for USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker. He played tackle for the Trojans, but figures to switch to guard in the pros. The first school other than ‘Bama with more than one player chosen was Florida when wideout Kadarius Toney wound up with the Giants 16 spots after Pitts went fourth. Virginia Tech joined that group with cornerback Caleb Farley at No. 22 to Tennessee and teammate Christian Darrisaw, a tackle taken by Minnesota. Both fit major needs. So did Harris to the Steelers, who traditionally have been a run-oriented team, but not recently. For the first time in school history, Northwestern had more than one first-rounder when the Chargers’ Slater was joined in the NFL by cornerback Greg Newsome to the Browns.
Denver stays hot with home win DENVER – Nikola Jokic had 19 points and 11 rebounds in just three quarters to lead the Denver Nuggets past the Toronto Raptors 121-111 on Thursday night. Michael Porter Jr. scored 23 points for the Nuggets, who had seven players score in double figures and used a 31-8 run over the third and fourth quarters to win their fourth straight. Denver improved to 8-1 since Jamal Murray went down with a torn ACL in his left knee on April 12. The Nuggets also lost guards Monte Morris and Will Barton to hamstring injuries, but both are expected to return this season. Without its starting backcourt, Denver has relied on reserves Facu Campazzo, P.J. Dozier and Shaquille Harrison, a two-way player getting a chance to make an impact. He did Thursday with a season-high 11 points, and Campazzo followed up his first double-double on Wednesday night with 12 points. Jokic’s double-double was his 53rd of the season. OG Anunoby scored 25 points for the Raptors, Kyle Lowry had 20, and Malachi Flynn, who started in place of injured Fred VanVleet (hip), pitched in with 16. The Nuggets led by six in the second quarter and again late in the third, but Toronto rallied both times to tie it. It was 87-85 after three quarters. Denver scored the first 12 points of the fourth and held the Raptors to just a pair of 3-pointers by Lowry in the first 5:40 of the fourth. Lowry’s flagrant foul on P.J. Dozier led to a six-point possession for Denver and a 21-point lead. TIP-INS Porter rolled his left ankle late in Wednesday’s game but was fine Thursday night. ... Coach Michael Malone said Murray is still in Los Angeles after having surgery, and the team hopes to see him when it flies there Friday. “I think I speak for everybody in our group that we miss him, and we can’t wait to see him,” Malone said. UP NEXT Raptors: At Utah on Saturday night. Nuggets: At the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night.

Broncos could be in mix; Packers remain committed to All-Pro QBGreen Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers could be working his way to a new team if recent reports of his unhappiness are true.Jeffrey Phelps/Associated Press file GREEN BAY, Wis. – Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst reiterated Thursday that the team remains committed to quarterback Aaron Rodgers amid a report the reigning MVP doesn’t want to return to Green Bay. “As we’ve stated since the season ended, we are committed to Aaron in 2021 and beyond,” Gutekunst said in a statement released by the team. “Aaron has been a vital part of our success and we look forward to competing for another championship with him leading our team.” ESPN reported in the hours leading up to the draft that Rodgers doesn’t want to return to the Packers. The ESPN report said the Packers have offered to extend Rodgers’ contract and that team CEO Mark Murphy, Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur each flew out separately to meet Rodgers during the offseason. San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch acknowledged Thursday he had checked with the Packers about Rodgers’ potential availability and was quickly rebuffed. The 49ers selected North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the draft. “We inquired and it was a quick end to the conversation,” Lynch said. “It wasn’t happening. We’ve been excited (about Lance) for a long, long time. So we went right back to where we’ve been. That’s really excited about adding Trey Lance to the 49ers, and we’re thrilled about that.” Rodgers, 37, has spent his entire career with Green Bay since the Packers selected him with the 24th overall pick in the 2005 draft. But his long-term future has been a topic of speculation ever since the Packers traded up four spots in the first round to select Rodgers’ potential successor, Utah State quarterback Jordan Love, with the 26th overall pick in last year’s draft. Rodgers has three years remaining on his contract after signing a four-year, $134 million extension in August 2018. Gutekunst said Monday during a pre-draft Zoom session with reporters that “Aaron’s our guy.” “We’re really excited about Aaron Rodgers and his future with the Green Bay Packers,” Gutekunst said at the time. “We think he’s going to be our quarterback for the foreseeable future. I think that obviously every year there’s different things you go through to kind of get to the season, and I think we’re going through those right now whether it be contractually or whether it be working with our players on other things, and that’s where we are. “Again, he’s such a unique, different player than anyone that I’ve ever been around. He affects our organization in so many different ways that you just can’t value him because he’s so important to what we do. We’re excited moving forward and we’ll kind of see where things go.” Rodgers acknowledged after last year’s draft that he was surprised by the Love selection and that it complicated his hopes of finishing his career at Green Bay. Even as Rodgers threw an NFL-leading 48 touchdown passes and earned his third MVP award last season, he referred to his future as a “beautiful mystery.” During a Zoom session with reporters following the Packers’ NFC championship game loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rodgers said that “a lot of guys’ futures are uncertain, myself included.” Rodgers attempted to clarify those postgame remarks less than a week later when he said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that “I don’t think there’s any reason why I wouldn’t be back” with Green Bay in 2021. “There’s conversations to be had. I’m going to have them with the right people,” Rodgers said at the time. “But it’s the same conversations we have every single year. There’s no big, ‘I’m going to come to the table with I need this, this and this.’ We have honest conversations about where we’re at every single year, whether that’s with Brian, Matt, Mark. I’ve had these conversations for years. That’s part of being a leader on the squad and having a pulse on the team and the direction we’re going.” This continues an eventful stretch for Rodgers, who got engaged to actress Shailene Woodley and had a guest-hosting stint on “Jeopardy!” Rodgers said during promotional appearances for the “Jeopardy!” stint that he’d like to be the permanent host and that he believed he could work it around his football schedule. During Rodgers’ “Jeopardy!” guest-hosting appearance, a contestant used the final question of the show to write, “Who wanted to kick that field goal?,” a reference to the Packers’ controversial decision to attempt a field goal rather than going for it on fourth-and-goal with just over two minutes left in a game they were trailing 31-23. The Packers made the field goal but never got the ball again against the Bucs. Rodgers said that was “a great question.” Rodgers later told the contestant, “I can see (your answer) out on the podium, and I was like, ‘Please put something about the field goal on there. You will always be all-time in my book, my friend.”

Opening time trial performance set stage for big week in SwitzerlandDurango’s Sepp Kuss, front, is having fun this week racing at the front of the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland.Courtesy of Team Jumbo-Visma Sepp Kuss will be in the mix with a chance to compete for a podium this weekend at the Tour de Romandie. The 26-year-old professional cyclist from Durango sits in 11th place after a prologue time trial and two stages of the five-stage race in western Switzerland. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider is only 16 seconds behind the lead of Rohan Dennis, who won the prologue time trial. Kuss’ 13th-place finish in that prologue has been the surprise of the week thus far, as the world-famous climber showed his drastic improvement in the race against the clock. “I have surprised myself,” Kuss said in a team news release. “I worked hard on my time trial bike. This gives me confidence for the rest of the week and the time trials to come. I look forward to the upcoming mountain stages where the differences will be made.”With a strong time trial performance in the prologue backed up by safe finishes on the first two stages, Sepp Kuss sits 11 halfway into the Tour de Romandie.Courtesy of Team Jumbo-Visma As Kuss looks to gain more chances to compete for general classification victories, improvement in the time trial has been required. It was one of his top goals for the short offseason between 2020 and 2021. “Sepp rode his best time trial to date here. We have also trained a lot on the TT bike lately, and that is now paying off,” Team Jumbo-Visma director Jans Boven said in the news release. Kuss finished safely on the Stage 1 sprint won by Peter Sagan in 4 hours, 12 minutes, 40 seconds. Kuss placed 16th in the group finish to maintain position. Thursday was the first climbing stage of the week, and Kuss was able to safely finish 14th in the same 4:21:42 as stage winner Sonny Colbrelli. Going into the final climb, Kuss would in good position and tried to launch two attacks, but he could not get away from the group. “At the end of the stage, it was more of an elimination race,” Boven said of Stage 2. “The team executed the plan well. Antwan (Tolhoek) was in the breakaway, and Sepp and Steven (Kruijswijk) didn’t lose any time at the end and are still in a good position GC-wise.”Durango’s Sepp Kuss, front, tried two attacks on the final climb Thursday but couldn’t get away from the peloton. But he’s in podium contention going into the final three stages with a big climbing day to come Saturday in Switzerland.Courtesy of Team Jumbo-Visma Kuss is currently 16 seconds behind Dennis of the INEOS Grenadiers team. He is seven seconds off the podium, where INEOS rider Geraint Thomas is third. Friday’s Stage 3 ride is in Estavayer. The peloton will ride out and tackle a Category 3 climb before returning to ride a circuit with two Category 3 climbs for each of the three laps. Saturday is the biggest mountain stage with five categorized climbs, including a Category 1 summit finish in Thyon 2000. Sunday is one last time trial of only 10 miles in Friborg. Kuss will then look ahead to the Critérium du Dauphiné, before his second Tour de France and then his fourth appearance at the Spanish Vuelta, where he will have team leadership duties. jlivingston@durangoherald.com

Alabama corner a ‘sure thing’ ENGLEWOOD – The Denver Broncos bypassed quarterbacks Justin Fields and Mac Jones and selected Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II with the ninth pick of the NFL draft Thursday night. Instead of grabbing a quarterback to counter Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Derek Carr in the stacked AFC West, new general manager George Paton picked a cornerback who can help curtail those passers. Surtain is the second consecutive Alabama alum selected in the first round by the Broncos, who drafted wide receiver Jerry Jeudy with the 15th overall pick last year. Picking a defender leaves a QB room of incumbent Drew Lock and veteran Teddy Bridgewater. On Wednesday, Paton sent a 2021 sixth-round pick to Carolina for Bridgewater, who was 4-11 last year with the Panthers. Lock was 4-9 in Denver. Quarterback has been the Broncos’ biggest bugaboo since winning Super Bowl 50 in Hall of Famer Peyton Manning’s farewell game – they haven’t been back to the playoffs since. The Panthers, who are paying $7 million of the $10 million Bridgewater is due in 2021, are restructuring his deal to facilitate the trade that is expected to be finalized by Saturday. Paton has rebuilt Denver’s secondary this offseason, signing free agent cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Ronald Darby and re-signing safeties Kareem Jackson and Justin Simmons, who was franchised for a second consecutive year.
