Studies have shown about 50 puffer tickets are issued per year in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>The bill exempts car owners with remote-start systems if drivers keep a keyless start fob away from vehicle so it can\u2019t be moved.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate 33-1 passed the bill 33-1 on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin said deputies didn\u2019t issue tickets for puffer violations, but that puffers presented a problem because they seem to encourage automobile theft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had many vehicles stolen from our residents and visitors because of puffer cars,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s office is part of Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement, or BATTLE team, and Nowlin said deputies conducted \u201cpuffer patrols\u201d throughout the winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to prevent auto thefts and educate our citizens to the dangers,\u201d Nowlin said. \u201cIf your vehicle is stolen while left unattended, there is a strong possibility that your auto insurance will not pay for your loss.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bill would allow drivers to leave their car running unattended if they keep a keyless start fob away from vehicle so it can\u2019t be moved.Wikipedia The bill updates the state\u2019s ban on \u201cpuffers,\u201d cars left running while the driver is away.
