(Courtesy of Sundog Gallery)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Sundog Gallery in Mancos has announced a new solo exhibition titled \u201cPortals,\u201d which is set to open Aug. 14. The exhibit will showcase oil paintings of the American Southwest by late Four Corners artist Stanton Englehart.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit will open with a free public reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 14 at Sundog Gallery at 107 Grand Ave. in Mancos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnown for his vibrant color palettes, sweeping brushstrokes and abstract sensibilities, Englehart viewed the rugged canyons and expansive skies of the region not just as scenery, but as gateways to deeper emotional and metaphysical realms,\u201d an exhibit description from Sundog said. \u201cThis exhibition highlights his lifelong dedication to capturing the raw energy, shifting light and timeless essence of the high desert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Englehart was born on a farm in Cortez in 1931 and died in 2009. He moved to Durango in 1957 and was a longtime educator. He earned a master\u2019s degree in fine arts at the University of Colorado and founded Fort Lewis College\u2019s art department.<\/p>\n<p>He taught in the art department for 30 years before retiring in 1991 to paint full-time.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition brings together a selection of his artwork, which will be available for purchase during the show. The last day is Sept. 30.
