Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced Monday that individuals and businesses impacted by wildfires throughout the state can apply for a state tax extension on sales and income tax and other fees.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaxpayers who have been impacted by the wildfires include Coloradans who have had to evacuate their homes due to a nearby wildfire or those that have had to halt business operations due to owning a business in an evacuated area,\u201d Madelyn Remington, a spokesperson for the governor\u2019s office, said in a statement. \u201cBy providing tax relief during this tough time, we hope that it\u2019s one less thing for Coloradans to worry about while they rebuild.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those impacted by evacuations from the Ferris Fire burning 15 miles northwest of Dolores can call the Department of Revenue at 303-238-7378 to apply for an extension on income tax normally due on Oct. 15 and sales tax normally due between Monday and Oct. 20.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo Coloradan should have to choose between rebuilding a life and meeting a tax deadline. By extending these deadlines for people and small businesses, we\u2019re helping Coloradans impacted by wildfires get the time and space needed to recover, without the added pressure of late fees,\u201d Polis said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Taxpayers can request penalty waivers that allow them until Dec. 31 to file income and sales taxes and Nov. 6 to file other taxes like marijuana, fuel and retailer delivery taxes. The extension only applies to state taxes, not municipal taxes collected by home rule cities like Cortez and Durango. The Department of Revenue will not automatically apply the deadline extension.<\/p>\n
