We have a vested interest in not wanting to arrest the same folks,\u201d Hebbe said. \u201cWe want to arrest the bad guys and keep them in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea, broached by a Leadership San Juan class, would be to bring recently released detainees to an orientation day to introduce them to all types of services to help them be successful in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing back into society, it shouldn\u2019t just be getting released from detention: You\u2019ve been bad, it\u2019s over, goodbye, good luck,\u201d Hebbe said.<\/p>\n<p>Hebbe said the project has good potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need to register with probation officers. If they are a sex offender, they need to register,\u201d Hebbe said, pointing out if they don\u2019t register, a warrant will be issued and they go back to jail.<\/p>\n<p>People Assisting the Homeless might be able to talk to them about housing, while Path Builders could be there for those who need to line up a job, Hebbe said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=2000afb7-948f-541b-8d08-6b97955d3a0e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1088\" height=\"725\" alt=\"A detainee receives property from outside of the facility from a San Juan County Detention Center guard. Brad Ryan\/Special to Tri-City Record<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Brad Ryan<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>To prepare, the Farmington Police Department plans to host an April 2 summit at the Farmington Civic Center.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Deb Dumont wanted to know whether the summit was open to everyone, She said she would \u201clike to reach out to the nonprofits in Durango and to the helping groups on the Navajo Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thinking of expanding it,\u201d Hebbe said. \u201cIt started out as nonprofit, and then people in the helping field started showing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assistant City Manager Shana Reeves said the summit would bring together a myriad help groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe summit is bringing all of these groups together \u2013 to have trainings. This project would be a subset of that. The resource gathering is to support this project. They are all collectively there and then, can turn their attention to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dumont said she could see this summit continuing with different projects in the future. \u201cThat player group would be the one that would essentially keep moving forward with different projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hebbe pointed out the police department did a summit last fall, and it focused on \u201cnonprofits\u201d that needed leadership training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we\u2019re back to who\u2019s coming to this \u2013 maybe we should expand it \u2013 but here is a project over here: Can we get them to focus on that,\u201d Hebbe said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a great idea because once people are released they have so many barriers,\u201d Commission Cheri Floyd said.<\/p>\n<p>Newly appointed Commissioner Alyssa Begay said she works with the Farmington Women\u2019s Business Center, and the organization \u201chad a program where we went to a women\u2019s detention center and had a financial ability summit. Our clientele is growing with people who are being rehabilitated back into society. I really love this.
