(Adobe stock image)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Romolo Tavani<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, San Juan County was ranked seventh out of the 33 counties in New Mexico for the number of domestic violence cases filed in the state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sanjuancountydata.org\/index.php\/indicators\/crime-safety\/safety%20\" id=\"link-23e9ace163b7bda9db9b6c34686b2124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Juan County Partnership<\/a> states that there were a total of 1,266 domestic violence incidents reported to Law Enforcement in San Juan County, or 11 incidents per 1,000 people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanjuanregional.com\/upload\/docs\/About%20Us\/2023%20CHNA%20Report%20-%20San%20Juan%20County%20NM.pdf%20\" id=\"link-ad1d7113d9caf2aa7d637e699a246168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The 2023 Professional Research Consultants Community Health<\/a> survey, which provides information on issues that concern the well-being of a community, was conducted on behalf of San Juan Regional Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a data-driven approach to determining needs in San Juan County, the report found that 50.7% of key informants perceive injury and violence as a moderate issue in San Juan County. About 23.9% believe it is a major problem, 22.4% believe it is a minor problem, and 3.0% do not believe it is a problem at all.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">Where to find help<\/h4>\n<p>There are two domestic violence and abuse shelters located in Farmington. The Family Crisis Center hotline is (505) 564-9192. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.domesticshelters.org\/help\/nm\/farmington\/87401\/navajo-united-methodist-center-new-beginnings-program%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Navajo United Methodist Center<\/a> is a domestic violence program that can be reached at (505) 325-7578. For recommendations to prevent child deaths, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmhealth.org\/publication\/view\/report\/8272\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.nmhealth.org\/publication\/view\/report\/8272\/.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Respondents who said it was a major problem were asked what they believed the causes were.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlcoholism and drug abuse are closely related to violence and injury in this community,\u201d said one respondent, who identified as a physician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegular stabbings and shootings, and a high call volume for EMS for severe trauma,\u201d said a public official.<\/p>\n<p>Others believe the violence can be traced to income and poverty, incidence and prevalence, domestic and family violence, gang violence and lack of providers and law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 to 2020, mortality rates from unintentional injury in San Juan County were at 95.4%. In 2011, the rate was 79.5%, an increase of 15.9 percentage points in the past decade.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=cc741966-0172-5ed1-b986-e1c247253762&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1278\" height=\"526\" alt=\"Unintentional injuries rates (Courtesy Professional Research Consultants)\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Unintentional injuries rates (Courtesy Professional Research Consultants)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Romolo Tavani<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Healthy People states that the main cause of death in children in the United States is from unintentional deaths.<\/p>\n<p>From 2020 to 2021, there were a total of 163 child deaths in New Mexico and 59, or 36.2%, of them were attributed to unintentional injury.
