(Courtesy Colorado Avalanche Information Center)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Colorado Avalanche Information Center<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>A backcountry skier died in an avalanche Friday afternoon near Cameron Pass, bordering Jackson and Larimer counties on Colorado\u2019s Front Range.<\/p>\n<p>The death appeared to be the first reported avalanche fatality of the 2021-22 winter season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avalanche.state.co.us\/\" id=\"link-95a41f0c6acb7d589ac32cca3b0142d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Colorado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The avalanche occurred about 2 p.m. on a northeast-facing slope below treeline on the southeast end of South Diamond Peak, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.<\/p>\n<p>The skier was swept up and fully buried by the avalanche.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victim\u2019s partner located him with a transceiver and probe pole and extricate him from the snow, but he did not survive,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n<p>Search and rescue personnel from Jackson County and the Diamond Peaks Ski Patrol recovered the man\u2019s body after dark.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=8c559462-01e4-5edd-b8bf-06770a4b3171&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"A satellite image looking northwest toward South Diamond Peak and Cameron Pass. (Courtesy Colorado Avalanche Information Center)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Colorado Avalanche Information Center<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The avalanche broke on a layer of faceted snow 1 to 3 feet below the snow surface and was about 250 feet wide, said the CAIC report, published Saturday by forecaster Mike Cooperstein. The avalanche crown was on a convex area with a slope angle that rose to about 38 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>The avalanche occurred in an area with \u201cconsiderable,\u201d or Level 3, risk of avalanches. CAIC rates risk on five levels of danger, from \u201clow\u201d to \u201cextreme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An avalanche warning was in effect Friday and Saturday for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avalanche.state.co.us\/\" id=\"link-7cc0d64cd08596da11f6858f8aa203b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">southern San Juan Mountains<\/a>, which includes La Plata County.
