Friends of the Library welcome young member

Meet the youngest member of the Friends of the Library!

James Schneider, 7, of Bayfield is an enthusiastic patron of the Pine River Library. He knew that if he could bring a friend to join the library in September he would be able to spin the wheel to win a prize. When he realized that his little brother, Tommy, 4, didn't have a card, he asked his mom, Svatka, if Tommy could sign up. Brenda Marshall, assistant director, helped Tommy get his new card.

Then it was time for James to spin the wheel! It landed on a "Free Membership to the Friends of the Library." Brenda said she initially assumed that would be of very little interest to a seven-year-old so she offered him a small toy instead, but James said he wanted to know what the membership was.

Marshall explained that the Friends of the Library are a group of people who support the library - they have meetings, raise money, and help make decisions. James listened carefully and said, "I want that!" After his mom helped him fill out the membership form, James pinned a Pine River Library button to his shirt and proudly proclaimed to his brother "I work here now!"

Unfortunately James will be unable to attend any meetings as they are held on Thursday mornings while he is at school. He said he's going to volunteer at their next event if his mom says he can.

James and his family often come to the library to play and check out books and DVDs. They have attended events as varied as storytimes, outdoor movies, and the Zucchini Festival. James is also an artist and his painting of a dragon was chosen to be featured in the upcoming Community Art Show which will be hung in October.

All those who sign up for a library card during September to be entered into a drawing; or they can bring a friend and spin the wheel to win a prize.
