Letters: Where the bridge money should be spent

The 32nd Street Bridge is unnecessary. Let’s use this money where it is really needed!

I have lived in the vicinity of the 32nd Street corridor for over 15 years. I have traveled the corridor at least twice a day for that entire time. It is one of the safest and most well-planned corridors in Durango – except for the section from Holly Avenue to County Road 250. This is where this bridge money should be spent.

There are no sidewalks, let alone bike lanes, on this section of 32nd Street. There are no crosswalks to signal drivers of pedestrian traffic; the speed limit increases on this stretch as well.

There have been two large apartment buildings, The Lumien Apartments, built on this stretch in the past few years, targeted for low-income individuals and families. Many of the residents of these buildings are disabled; I know, my sister is one of them. She does not drive a car, she cannot ride a bike any longer and she can’t walk on 32nd because she’s afraid of getting hit; there are no sidewalks on either side of the street and the street is much narrower here.

Many times I have seen people walking, riding bicycles and motorized carts on this section with groceries, small children and pets. Dangerous!

If we as a community are truly concerned with using our tax dollars to improve the safety and accessibility of our streets, then let’s do that where it is really needed.

That’s not this bridge.
