Breakfast available at 9Health Fair

The Upper Pine Fire Auxiliary will sell breakfast burritos at the 9Health Fair Saturday morning at Bayfield Elementary School. The fair is from 7 until 11:30 a.m.

Burritos are $5 each and all proceeds to go support the firefighters & EMTs. There will be several screenings available including blood chemistry for $30. A 12-hour fast is required. Participants who are fasting should drink plenty of water and take their medications. Diabetics should not fast. More information is at www.9healthfair.org.

Financial planning workshop for to be held

There will be a free presentation on financial planning for college at 6 p.m.Monday, May 12 at the Bayfield Middle School cafeteria.

Representatives from College in Colorado, Fort Lewis College and San Juan College will discuss college affordability and financial planning.

Kindergarten registration May 19-20 at BEPS

Children who are five by Sept. 15 can register for kindergarten at Bayfield Elementary Primary School. Registration is on May 19 and 20. Parents need to bring a birth certificate and copy of immunization records. Children will be able to see the kindergarten classrooms. To make an appointment, call 884-0881.

Ignacio library hosting book club, story time

The Mystery Book Club will meet at noon on Monday, May 12 at the Ignacio Community Library for the monthly Mystery Book Club. This month's title is Death of a Red Heroine.

A special preschooler story time with author Melanie Milburn will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13. For more information, call 563-9287.

Leadership La Plata applications due June 3

Leadership La Plata is accepting applicants for its 2014-15 class. The goal of LLP is to establish a cadre of leaders who are committed to developing leadership skills, broadening knowledge of La Plata County and representing strength in diversity. Applications to participate in the 2014-2015 class are due by June 3 and can be completed online at www.leadershiplaplata.org.

PRCLC offering flyfishing introduction

Pine River Community Learning Center will have Glenn Tinnin teach an introduction of the techniques of flyfishing and how to tie flies from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7 at its Bayfield classroom at 54 Mill Street.

Fishing will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Park in Bayfield. The cost is $25. Please call 563-0861 to preregister by 3 p.m. Tuesday May 6. There is a limit of eight spots available.

BEEP holding playground work day

Bayfield Early Education Program will have "playground beautification" on from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Volunteers are needed to fix and clean the playground in Foxfire Farms. For more information, call 884-7137.

PRCLC offers class on grilling foods

Participants will learn how to grill, have fun, and eat what they cook at the Pine River Community Learning Center in Ignacio at 535 Candelaria Heights from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9. The price will be $25. Call 563-0861 for more information and to preregister by May 8.

New caregiver support groups announced

The Alzheimer's Association of Southwest Colorado announces creation of several new caregiver support groups.

A group is now meeting on the first Tuesday each month at 10 a.m. at the Pine River Senior Center in Bayfield.

Other existing groups meet in Durango on the second Tuesday each month at 7 p.m. at the Alzheimer's Association office, 701 Camino del Rio first floor conference room; and the third Wednesday each month at 10:30 a.m. at the La Plata County Senior Center, 2424 Main Avenue.

A new group now meets on the third Thursday each month at 11 a.m. at the Sunshine Gardens Senior Community, 25 Sunshine Court.

In Pagosa Springs, a new group is meeting the last Monday each month at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 225 S. Pagosa Blvd.

Salute to Veterans announces kickoff

Flags will be flying high on Monday, May 12 for local veterans and military families. Salute to Veterans (S2V), a new nonprofit dedicated to serving veterans, will hold its kickoff event at 6 p.m. at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Featured speakers include State Sen. Ellen Roberts and Gen. Ronald Fogleman, former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. The Bar D Wranglers and cowboy poet Sam Noble will add their voices in support of the members of the military who live in Durango and surrounding areas. Al Harper, owner of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, has a special surprise for the audience.

"Our goal is to be the central source for information and referrals for veterans and their families," said Ron Tyner, the group's president. "We plan to open a storefront that will be a gathering place to welcome and support veterans. We will work closely with all the dedicated veterans organizations in the community."

Adapting the model established by the highly successful Welcome Home Montrose program, S2V will offer a wide range of activities and services that will give members of the community many opportunities to become involved and show their gratitude to veterans. The kickoff event on May 12 is free and open to everyone.
