The West is the best

West sweeps the East at the McDonald’s All-American games in Chicago

CHICAGO – Jahlil Okafor scored 17 points and had seven rebounds, and Emmanuel Mudiay added 15 points as the West team defeated the East 105-102 in the boys McDonald’s All-American game Wednesday night.

Justin Jackson, who shared co-MVP honors with Okafor, led the East with 23 points. The North Carolina commit was 11-of-14 shooting.

Tyus Jones made a 3 with 1 minutes, 46 seconds left to get the East within 99-98, and his fadeaway baseline jumper gave the East a shortlived lead at 103-102 with 47.7 seconds left, but his future Duke teammate gave the West the lead back for good with a dunk with 40 seconds left.

Indiana commit James Blackmon Jr. missed a 3 with 2.9 seconds left that would have tied the game for the East.

Rashad Vaughn, who is going to UNLV, made a jumper, then had a dunk to give the West an 82-74 lead midway through the half, but Jackson kept the East in the game, scoring seven points in a 2:10 span.

Mudiay, who is going to play for Larry Brown next season at Southern Methodist, drove the lane for a dunk in the final seconds to close out the first half as the West cut the East lead to 51-50.

Jackson led all scorers in the first half with 10. Ohio State commit D’Angelo Russell added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting for the East. Okafor led the West with eight points and five rebounds.

Jones finished with 10 assists and seven points for the East, and Kevon Looney added 11 rebounds and six points.

West 80, East 78

Brianna Turner hit a jumper with 53 seconds left to lift the West to a two-point win over the East in the 13th annual McDonald’s All-American girls basketball game Wednesday night.

The Notre Dame-bound star had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the West, which won despite going 0-for-20 from the 3-point line. She earned MVP honors for the game.

The East had a chance, but Jatarie White’s foul line jumper missed with 9 seconds left.

Tennessee signee Jaime Nared led the West with 15 points. Jordin Canada, one of three future UCLA players in the game, broke the McDonald’s record with seven assists, including the record-breaker on Turner’s winner.

Shakayla Thomas, who will head to Florida State next year, led the East with 19 points.
