Vendor applications available for Bayfield Heritage Days
Bayfield Heritage Days will take place this year on Sept. 26 and 27. The Bar D Wranglers will perform Friday, Sept. 26 in the old Bayfield Middle School gym. Tickets will be on sale in September.
Vendor applications for Saturday, Sept. 27 are available now at www.bayfieldheritagedays.org, then click on the "events" tab.
Vendor spaces are $40 for a 10x10 foot space, or $75 for a double space. There is a $5 discount if the application and payment are received by Tuesday, Sept. 2. Booths for demonstrations only (no sales) are free.

BHS band, choir selling coffee
Bayfield band and choir members are selling Desert Sun Coffee. Orders are due Thursday, Aug. 28. The coffee will be roasted in Durango that weekend, and it will be delivered the following week. Coffee is $12 for a 12-ounce bag of Southwest Morning Blend, Dark Canyon French Roast, or Decaf Mountain Blend in whole bean or ground coffee. Orders can be placed with BHS band or choir students, or by calling Jenna Stumpf at 884-8366.
San Juan Brewfest is Saturday in Durango
The 16th annual San Juan Brewfest is tomorrow from 1 to 5 p.m. in Buckley Park (13th and Main) in Durango. It's a benefit for United Way of Southwest Colorado.
More than 50 breweries from around the country will be represented. They include Bayfield's own Bottom Shelf Brewery, Carvers, Ska, Steamworks, Durango Brewing, and BREW from Durango, also Santa Fe Brewing, Moab Brewery, and Upslope Brewing from Boulder. Tickets are $25 per person.
Kindles available at Ignacio library
The Ignacio Community Library is now offering Kindle Paperwhites for checkout. These pre-loaded devices allow patrons to read the newest titles, as well as classics, in the mystery fiction, science fiction, and general fiction genres. Stop by the library for more information.
Bayfield library presents "Spanish Experience"
The Pine River Library is offering a three-part series focusing on Spanish and social issues in Latin America. This class is perfect for beginners, intermediates, or those wanting to discuss current events. Participants are welcome to attend part of each class, or the entire class.
The classes will meet Wednesday evenings, from Sept. 5-17, starting at 6 p.m. each evening. Advance registration is required, as space is limited.
"The Spanish Experience" will be taught by former Fort Lewis College professor Jim Fitzgerald, who taught sociology and Spanish for more than 30 years. Fitzgerald also served in the U.S. Peace Corps, serving in Chile, Puerto Rico, and Ecuador. During his time at F.L.C., he coordinated service learning semesters in Mexico. Ignacio library starting storytime next week
Ignacio Community Library will have story time at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27. This session will feature snacks, stories and end-of-summer fun with bubbles. Library staff will teach new ways to enjoy books with the children in your life.
Navajo State Park offering astronomy program Saturday
The night sky glistens with stars in southwest Colorado and a special astronomy program is being offered starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Navajo State Park.
Astronomer John Buting, who has given presentations at national parks throughout the West, will present an informative talk about the stars, constellations and more. Telescopes will be available, or bring your own.
The event is also part of Navajo State Park's 50th anniversary celebration on Saturday. The celebration will feature an open house at the visitors' center starting at noon and 15 percent off bookstore items all day.
The evening program will begin at 8 p.m. with a presentation about the astronomy of the native Navajo people, the original inhabitants of the area. Park Naturalist Janet Marie Clawson-Cano, will explain Navajo astronomy and constellations, and the hundreds of related rock art panels that have been found in canyons in the area. Most of those panels, unfortunately, are now under the water of Navajo Reservoir.
At 9 p.m., Buting will begin his "Navajo Dark Sky Program" at the Arboles Point Campground. Buting is one of the National Park System's "Dark Rangers" and provides an educational and entertaining program. The sky over the state park area is very dark which helps to provide a clear view of the Milky Way which stretches from horizon to horizon. A special treat for stargazers will be the rings of Saturn which are shining very bright this summer. Buting will explain the origins of constellations and also talk about Navajo astronomy. "This will be a special evening at the park and everyone is invited to attend," said Clawson-Cano. The program is free. Entry to the park is $7 per vehicle and an annual pass costs $70.
Ag leadership program accepting applications
The Colorado Agricultural Leadership Program (CALP) is seeks individuals interested in public affairs and developing their expertise in matters affecting Colorado agriculture and rural communities. The program is open to any individual engaged in serving rural communities, production agriculture, all related agricultural industry and business, extension services and education. Individuals may be in the early or middle phase of their leadership career, and are looking for that next level of training or experience. CALP provides practical, applied experiences and will be a unique experience for each participant. Applications are due Sept. 1 and online applications can be found at www.coloagleaders.org.
