County Greens: ‘Yes’ on 69, ‘No’ on 71

With a complex Colorado ballot including numerous substantive state and local ballot issues, the La Plata County Green Party would like to offer its state and county endorsements.

The party recommends a “Yes” vote on:

Amendment 69 – statewide health care system (ColoradoCare) to establish a universal health care system for all Colorado citizens including no premiums, no deductibles and no co-pays.Amendment 70 – state minimum wage to increase from $8.31 to $9.30/hour beginning 2017 until $12/hour in 2020.Amendment 72 – increase cigarette and tobacco tax to increase from $.84 to $2.59 per pack to be distributed for tobacco prevention and health related programs.Proposition 106 – access to medical aid-in-dying to allow terminally ill with prognosis of six months or less to voluntarily end their life.County ballot issue 1A – road and bridge mill levy increase $4.5 million to fund county road and bridge construction with provision that all such funds are dedicated to road and bridge infrastructure.County ballot issue 3A – raises $1.7 million for the 9-R School District to maintain programs that support college and workforce-ready graduates.County ballot issue 3B – raises $28 million for Bayfield School District to replace a 100-year old school building and upgrade other school facilities. The La Plata County Green Party recommends a “No” vote on:

Amendment 71 – aka “Raise the Bar,” making it more difficult to amend the Constitution by increasing signatures required to 2 percent from each state senate district and amendment passage by 55 percent of registered voters (rather than current majority vote).Proposition 107 – presidential primary elections proposes to establish a presidential primary which would be “winner take all” in Colorado thereby eliminating a presidential caucus.County ballot issue 1B – new airport terminal mill levy would raise $40 million (repayment cost $64 million) to fund a new terminal and improvements. The need has not been adequately documented, and since Federal Aviation Administration funds are speculative, a new airport is not a community-wide priority and other more pressing County needs exist like a day care center.Lin Alicia Martin
