Judicial District holds community meeting

The 6th Judicial District Rural Collaborative will host an open community meeting from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. today in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Participants will learn what the local organizations are doing with prevention education – to stop violence before it happens. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. Featured speakers will include Jennifer Turner, La Plata Youth Services; Samantha Weiss, Sexual Assault Services Organization; Liz Mora, Women’s Resource Center; Christian Champagne, 6th Judicial District; Kendra Reichle, Fort Lewis College; 9-R School District; Dan Cyr, Bayfield Marshall’s Office; SOS; and more.

Groundbreaking to be held for Mercy hospice

Mercy Regional Medical Center and Mercy Health Foundation will host a groundbreaking for the new Hospice of Mercy residence at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The ceremony, to include a site blessing and brief comments by hospital and foundation representatives, will take place on an undeveloped plot of land in the parking area on the southwest side of the hospital at 1010 Three Springs Blvd.

When complete, the 11,000-square-foot, eight-bed facility will occupy 1.3 acres that will include gardens and dedicated parking. Facility elevations, interiors, floor plans and landscaping plans for the $5.6 million facility will be on display. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Learn Tumblebooks database on Tuesday

The Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield, will host an informational session on how to use its new Tumblebooks database from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Tumblebooks is a virtual collection of talking and animated picture books, including many classic titles and fairy tales. Tumblebooks also provides access to additional resources that build reading, math and multiple literacy skills, as well as nonfiction books, educational games and puzzles. Parents are welcome to bring their children to the event.

Wine Experience returns in May

The 10th annual Durango Wine Experience will take place from May 5 to 7 in Durango.

The Durango Wine Experience offers public tastings, more than six educational wine, craft beer and spirit seminars, and multiple wine dinners. The 2016 event will benefit the United Way of Southwest Colorado.

The event’s signature, multi-location public tasting event, the “Walk-About,” will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. May 6. The event will feature hundreds of wines and light appetizers spread among the locations. Check-in will take place at the Strater Hotel Lobby, 699 Main Ave.

The Grand Tasting will take place from 3 to 6:30 p.m. May 7 under the outdoor festival tent at First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St. Vendors, which will include wineries, distillers and craft brewers, are scheduled to participate.
