Men must be aware of lead in hair dyes

Progressive hair dyes contain lead acetate. Lead acetate has been linked to cancer, lead poisoning, nausea and death in the most serious cases by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. However, the Food and Drug Administration still permits the use of lead acetate in hair care products.

Progressive hair dyes are common, especially among men. They slowly darken gray hairs, making the change less obvious. Lead acetate is the ingredient that slowly darkens the hair, but continuous contact with it is case for serious health concerns.

Colorado is not immune from these health concerns, as several men in Colorado continue to use progressive products to dye their hair.

The US Public Interest Research Group, along with over fifty other health organizations across Colorado and the U.S., is asking the FDA to join Europe and Canada by banning lead acetate in all hair care products.
