Basics of startups to be discussed Oct. 16

Judy Castleberry, director of San Juan College Enterprise Center, will give a presentation to the Kiwanis Club of the Narrow Gauge on the Four Corners Startup Weekend, an event of speed collaborative business planning to learn the basics of founding startup businesses, at 7 a.m. Oct. 16 at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.

Four Corners Startup Weekend will take place from Nov. 15-17 at San Juan College in Farmington.

Entrepreneur program accepting applications

The Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs will host an applicants night and open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at SCAPE, 1211 Main Ave., Suite 1.

SCAPE’s objective is to create high-growth, job-creating companies in Southwest Colorado. SCAPE’s focus is on emerging growth companies, and the program provides funding, education and mentoring to fully prepare businesses to enter markets, raise capital and increase their chances for success. Any industry or idea will be considered, but the focus of SCAPE is on high-growth start-ups whose primary markets will be outside of Southwest Colorado. Those selected for the program will receive up to $30,000 in equity capital to help build their company, along with free office space, mentorship and discounted business services. At the end of the four-month program, there will be a presentation given by all finalists to potential follow-on investors.

Durango Kiwanis Club donates to local groups

These organizations benefited from money raised by the Kiwanis Club of Durango at Pancake Day, Singles Auction, The Bill Mashaw Golf Tournament and by passing the hat:

Durango Youth Soccer Association was awarded $500.

Eye & Ear Program of La Plata and San Juan Counties, Colorado Inc. in honor of deceased member, Bob Tyner, was awarded $213.

Southwest Colorado eSchool was awarded $1,000.

Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence for Exploring Books for Children, a reading program for parents of young children, was awarded $700.

Music in the Mountains in honor of deceased member, Jim Garofalo, was awarded $200.

Chapman Hill was awarded $100 for an improvement project.

The Fraternal Order of Police was awarded $300.

Reading is Fundamental was awarded $150.

Bright Beginnings at La Plata Family Center was awarded $750.

Tri-County Head Start was awarded $4,500 for summer scholarships.

Nicole M. was awarded $156 for her son’s surgery.

Youth Baseball was awarded $1,400.

Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County was awarded $4,000 and volunteer hours.

Kiwanis Florida Mesa Imagination Library was awarded $1,000.

The club sponsored the annual Pancake Day and raised more than $12,000 to help children’s organizations.

Park Elementary School was awarded $76 for the wishing well, which was placed in the school.

Wanda Ellingson elected to board of directors

Durango resident Wanda Ellingson was recently elected to the National Association of Social Workers Board of Directors.

Ellingson will represent region 12, which includes the Rocky Mountain and western states along with Alaska, Hawaii and the territory of Guam. Ellingson is a clinical associate professor and director of the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work Four Corners Program in Durango. She received a degree in sociology from Truman State University and her MSW from the University of Minnesota Graduate School of Social Work. She also received the Barbara Conrad Leadership Award in 2009 and the Kay Stephenson Faculty Citizenship Award in 2009.

Alexander Fraley appointed to task force

Interventional cardiologist and vascular specialist Dr. Alexander Fraley of Mercy Cardiology Associates was appointed by Gov. John Hickenlooper to be a part of the 15-member STEMI (ST-evaluation myocardial infarction) Task Force for Colorado.

The bill that created the task force was signed by the governor in May and members of the task force were appointed in August.

SB13-225 will improve hospital care for victims of heart attacks and strokes and includes formation of two new statewide task forces: The STEMI Task Force and a Stroke Advisory Board. STEMI Task Force members are responsible for studying and making recommendations for developing a statewide plan to improve quality of care to STEMI patients. The task force is to research: creating a state database or registry; allowing access to aggregated STEMI data to interested parties; developing a plan to encourage rural and urban hospitals to coordinate services; and whether designating hospitals for STEMI care is appropriate or needed to assure access to the best quality care for Colorado residents with STEMI events.

Chamber scheduled to host Eggs & Issues

The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host an Eggs & Issues featuring upcoming ballot issues at 8 a.m. Oct. 16 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

Issues to be presented will include: the grocery-bag fee, Durango Fire & Rescue consolidation, and Amendment 66 concerning education and school funding. Reservations are required. The cost is $15 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers.
