For a small town, Bayfield paid a large price during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Three men, who were recent graduates of Bayfield High School, were killed on the USS Arizona on Dec. 7, 1941.
At noon on Thursday, American Legion Post 143 in Bayfield will honor the three men, Ralph Fife, Eugene Barry and Harold Carmack. Their descendents have been invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held at the new Veterans Memorial in the Pine River Cemetery.
At the Pine River Valley Historical Society Museum, the three men also are remembered. Berry and Carmack joined the Navy under the buddy program in 1940, and both were firemen second class. Fife was a seaman first class.
There will be comments about the importance of Pearl Harbor Day in American history, along with a rendition of Taps and a lowering of the flags at the memorial. Refreshments will be served.
