Bayfield football takes control of 2A Southwest League

The Bayfield Wolverines continued their dominance of Alamosa with a resounding 28-0 victory Friday night. Bayfield has now beaten Alamosa (4-2) in all nine football games since they started playing in 2010.

It was a suffocating defense that set the tone for the Wolverines as they prevented the Mean Moose from crossing the 50-yard line during the game. Alamosa came in with a strong passing game with twins, Kasey Jones connecting with Jade Jones for five touchdowns on the season. A crosswind during the game played havoc with the punting and passing game and contributed to the Jones’ failure to move against Bayfield.

On its first possession Bayfield moved to score when quarterback Isaac Ross bulled over from one yard out. Zane Liddell’s kick was good and Bayfield had an early 7-0 with 7:00 left in the opening stanza. Ross scored again on a race to the flag from 24 yards out in the second quarter for a 13-0 lead. Cael Schaefer contributed the third TD in the second quarter with a 1-yard plunge and Deegan Barnes caught a Ross pass for a 2-point conversion. The Wolverines went into homecoming halftime in Alamosa with a 21-0 lead.

After a lethargic third quarter full of delays, penalties, and little ball movement, Bayfield mounted one final drive culminating in a 5-yard pass from Ross to Caden Wood early in the fourth quarter. Liddell’s extra point put the final touches on the scoring.

The victory puts Bayfield (4-1 2-0) in the driver’s seat in the Southwest 2A league. Coupled with Cortez’s upset of Pagosa Springs (1-5, 0-2) on Friday night, Bayfield could clinch the league title in two weeks when they visit Cortez (3-3, 1-0).

Next week Bayfield is on the road again for a non-league Saturday afternoon game against La Junta (3-3, 1-1 2A Tri-Peaks). The game will kick off at 1 p.m.
