Having already had her head bounced off BHS Gymnasium’s court during the first quarter on Monday by a Mean Moose destroying her perimeter screen, Lady Wolverine Alaysia Kremer’s evening went from pained to perilous in the fourth quarter.

Temporarily able to forget a headache, the no-brakes junior managed to draw a foul from Alamosa freshman reserve Emily Melgoza on a hard take to the hoop with 5:02 left in the final frame, but crash-landed upon her left knee near the end wall.

Fortunate to require just a large ice bag and an early ending to her efforts, Kremer managed to knock down two three-pointers and match freshman Renae Foutz’s team-high eight points in a 65-27 home loss not regarded nearly as well as the team’s 60-24 loss on Friday at Centauri.

Credited with 13 points and as many rebounds against the Lady Falcons, senior center Abby Tate managed just six points against AHS, though three came on a confidence-boosting three-pointer during the third quarter against the senior-less Moose. Senior guard Jordan Martindale logged three points, and junior Abria Thayer two – Bayfield’s first points of the game, in fact, after the guests had taken a 9-0 lead via a trey by junior Miranda Geringer.

After Thayer got the Lady Wolverines (1-12, 0-3 3A Intermountain) on the scoreboard, however, Alamosa junior Mary Masias immediately responded with another triple. Geringer’s second three increased AHS’ lead to 22-3, not long before Kremer cashed her first three-ball.

Behind junior forward Sydney Jackson’s six second-quarter and eight total first-half points, the Moose would go into halftime in complete control, 37-12, and eventually entered the fourth quarter up 54-22. With head coach Erik Melgoza able to empty his bench early, freshman reserve Taybor Wiedeman swished a three-pointer to enact the 35-point mercy rule at 57-22.

Wiedeman would total nine points, all after intermission, while Geringer finished with 10, junior forward Charley Higham 11, and Jackson 12. Going 5 of 6 from the free-throw line, Masias ended up with eight points as nine Moose booked at least a point.

Up next, the Lady Wolverines will host Pagosa Springs (9-3, 2-2) Friday, then pack up to travel out to Alamosa the next day. Alamosa (9-5, 4-0), meanwhile, will next host Centauri (7-6, 3-1) on Friday before the rematch with BHS.

Results from Bayfield’s rescheduled trip to nonleague Durango for a test against the Lady Demon JV were unavailable at press time.
