The northbound lane of South Camino del Rio was closed during the lunch hour Wednesday near the High Bridge for a four-vehicle crash.
The crash was reported at 11:39 a.m. The highway reopened at 1:35 p.m., said Cmdr. Casey Malone with the Durango Police Department.
The crash occurred when a man driving a blue Chevy Silverado exited the Durango Mall traveling southbound in the northbound lane, Malone said.
The vehicle encountered traffic near the High Bridge, and that resulted in three oncoming vehicles swerving and crashing. At least one vehicle rolled onto its side.
The man in the blue Chevy Silverado left the scene of the crash and continued to Walmart. Police quickly located the vehicle and the driver at Walmart, Malone said. It was not immediately known if the Chevy Silverado sustained damage in the crash.
Malone described the man as an older gentleman, who may have misunderstood the road configuration. Alcohol is not suspected to have played a role in the crash.
The driver was later identified as Johnny E. Martinez, 69, of Ignacio. He will likely be charged with vehicular assault and failing to remain at the scene of the crash after causing serious bodily injury, Malone said.
Two people were taken to the hospital.
