Porter-Norton responds to Aug. 18 editorial

Marsha Porter-Norton

Marsha Porter-Norton’s response to her supporters to The Durango Herald’s editorial of Sunday, Aug. 18, which faulted her excessive support for Commissioner Matt Salka’s reelection and that the event flyer included the line, “who has a conservative opponent.”

“Greetings,

This weekend’s Durango Herald editorial (Aug. 18) gave me a glowing review working as your commissioner. I thank the editor. It also called me out for doing a joint event with Matt Salka. My responses are that first, it is not novel for two candidates of the same party to do events together. A perusal of many local and regional candidates’ Facebook pages shows that they are having events with people in their own party all the time. Next, the flier mentioned is below. You can decide if it was good or bad or somewhat in between. However, please note that in it the fact that a candidate is associated with two anti-LBGQT+ groups is noted. This was not mentioned in the editorial. Serving as a commissioner means that everyone is impacted by one’s actions and decisions. Elected officials should do their work regardless of a person’s race, political affiliation, income, sexual orientation, gender or walk in life. All candidates should be questioned about who we associate with and the values we promote. I stand by the event, the flier and the work commissioner Salka and I are doing. If you have concerns or questions, please be in touch.”
