Numerous Memorial Day weekend events planned in Durango

Residents will honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military with a number of events over Memorial Day weekend in Durango.

“I hope that everybody just takes time out during that day to remember those individuals that have fallen in previous wars,” said Jeff Punches, spokesman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031 in Durango.

Here are the events planned for the weekend in Durango:

  • VFW Buddy Poppy Drive, Friday and Saturday at various locations.
  • Healing Fields at Santa Rita Park, Friday through Monday, Santa Rita Park.
Friday

8:30 a.m. Healing Fields Opening Ceremony at Santa Rita Park.

9 a.m. Healing Fields Lighting Ceremony at Santa Rita Park.

Saturday

8 a.m. Iron Horse Classic Veterans Train Ride to Silverton.

10 a.m. Flags placed on veterans graves at Greenmount Cemetery.

Monday

10 a.m. Vietnam Memorial Ceremony at Iris Park, 1235 Camino del Rio.

11 a.m. Veterans Memorial Ceremony at Greenmount Cemetery.

11:45 a.m. Those Lost At Sea Ceremony at the bridge behind Rotary Park.

Noon to 3 p.m. VFW Post 4031 Open House, 1550 Main Ave., all welcome.
