Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating a suspected arson incident that occurred earlier this month at the Archuleta County assessor’s and clerk’s offices in downtown Pagosa Springs.
The Pagosa Springs Fire Department responded to a burglary and fire alarm about 1:20 a.m. June 12 at 449 San Juan St., according to a news release from the Pagosa Springs Police Department. Fires were set in both the assessor’s and the clerk’s offices.
The fires caused moderate to severe damage. Based on initial evidence, police and firefighters suspect the fires were intentionally set, the release said.
No county employees were in the building at the time, and no injuries were reported. However, the offices have been closed, forcing their staff to relocate and work in less-than-ideal conditions.
Archuleta County Clerk Kristy Archuleta said the incident has impeded her department’s work, which includes the issuance of property titles, marriage licenses and motor vehicle registrations.
“We really don't have office space, and we are not fully functional,” Archuleta said. “Right now I don't have access to any of my motor vehicle computers. We will not be going back into that building for a long time.”
Efforts are underway to relocate staff, and a special meeting will be held Thursday to discuss options.
The investigation is continuing, and the police department asks that anyone with information contact dispatch at (970) 731-2160.
