Art, laughter and celebration: A July to remember at Durango Arts Center

Jason Lythgoe

As Durango celebrates the spirit of Independence Day with parades, music and wonderful community gatherings, the Durango Arts Center is ready to carry that festive energy through the entire month of July. With a lineup that blends bold visual art, laugh-out-loud theater and engaging summer camps, there’s no shortage of creativity and connection waiting for you downtown.

While the Fourth of July didn’t include fireworks this year, it’s still a time to celebrate the freedom of expression – and DAC is doing just that with two standout events that kick off on July 18.

First up is the opening of the Studio Art Quilt Associates exhibit, running July 18 to Aug. 30. This national touring show features extraordinary works from artists who are redefining the quilt as a fine art form. These aren’t your typical bed quilts – think bold textures, vibrant colors and meaningful stories, all stitched together in layered fabric compositions.

SAQA is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the art quilt, with a vision that this form of stitched, layered artwork is respected on par with painting or sculpture. Guided by values of excellence, innovation, integrity and inclusion, SAQA’s members use thread and fabric to challenge ideas, tell stories and showcase masterful design. The public is invited to attend the exhibit’s opening reception on July 18 to meet the artists and enjoy a first look at these stunning works.

The same evening, the DAC Theatre will raise the curtain on “5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche,” a hilarious and irreverent comedy that runs through July 27. Set in 1956, the play follows The Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein as they gather for their annual quiche breakfast. But when the threat of nuclear war interrupts the festivities, secrets begin to surface and the “widows” are forced to confront more than just their prize-winning recipes.

Winner of Best Overall Production at the 2012 NYC International Fringe Festival, this show is a clever blend of satire, slapstick and social commentary. The highlight of the run is the Gala Performance Night on July 19, featuring a pre-show champagne reception with gourmet bites, live music, a meet-and-greet with the director and producer, reserved premium seating and a post-show toast with the cast. Guests are encouraged to dress in 1950s Sunday best for an extra dose of fun.

Meanwhile, DAC’s summer art and theater camps are in full swing, offering young creatives the chance to explore their talents in a supportive and inspiring environment. Registration is still open, and DAC members receive 10% off all classes and event tickets, as well as discounts on gallery and artisan market purchases.

Whether you’re inspired by stitched stories or in the mood for mid-century mischief, the Durango Arts Center is your go-to spot for local culture this July. Celebrate creativity, community and artistic freedom all month long.
