Fire’s reach expands to over 8,500 acres

High pressure-induced heat and drying are anticipated to boost fire activity Monday ahead of a community meeting at the West Fork Fire Department on County Road 38, according to a news release.

Fire lines, indirect containment efforts and some aerial support remain as approaches to the fire, now at over 8,500 acres and attended to by over 650 personnel.

High pressure conditions, expected to last up until Thursday evening, may cause more spot fires and uphill runs, officials say.

Whether curious or concerned, residents can attend a community meeting 6 p.m. Monday at 12002 Road 38, Dolores, or livestream the event on the Stoner Mesa Fire Information Facebook page.

Previously inaccessible because of the fire, an area near the West Twin Springs Trail north of the fire received new hand lines tied to an existing trail near Stoner Creek. Scouting is underway for more lines farther up the creek. Dozer lines are planned Monday close to Road 335.

East of the fire, mop-up on indirect fire line will carry out in between Road 545 and Taylor Mesa. Farther east of the fire, dozers have opened up lines for engines to enter.

A connector line moving south between Stoner Mesa Trail and County Road 38 is making progress. Protection for structures along the county road remains a priority. Fire runs traveling up Stoner Creek Canyon to Taylor Mesa Fire, putting valuables watersheds at risk also in the eyesight of these fire lines.

Structures continue to be assessed along Colorado Highway 145, while more water pump installations for water tenders will take place along County Road 38 properties. Water tenders will be filling portable tanks available for engines and helicopters.

South of the fire, scouting for other lines are underway to protect timber sales.

Air Quality Index levels ranging from moderate to unhealthy ratings were reported for Dolores and Cortez Saturday into this morning, but light westerly winds are expected to clear up the air quality through the afternoon. Winds carrying particulates southwest are expected to create unhealthy air quality levels in Dolores and Cortez this evening and Tuesday morning.
