A musical and historical tribute to Durango’s 150 years

As a longtime fan of the Durango Choral Society, I have watched Carol Thurman’s composition, “Rivers, Rails and Roots – A Sesquicentennial Suite,” become reality over the last three years. She expanded from a piece initially titled “The Iron Horse Suite” to a broader theme about the history of Durango, including miners, cowboys and those seeking new adventures.

DCS women singers will sing the five-movement composition, accompanied by Native American flutes, drums, a string quartet and piano. What a wonderful and timely way to celebrate Durango and the sesquicentennial!

I, for one, plan to be at Sacred Heart Church at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 to honor Carol, Rhonda Muckerman and all the musicians for their talents and their love of community and country.
