James Marples’ recent letter claiming that the Colorado Constitution “references Almighty God as ‘Ruler of the Universe’” was interesting (Herald, July 10). A generous interpretation is that he was cautioning elected officials to take their vows seriously – good advice. But Marples’ assertion was a bit off.
The Colorado Constitution reads: “We, the people of Colorado, with profound reverence for the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, in order to form a more independent and perfect government; establish justice; insure (sic) tranquility; provide for the common defense; promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the State of Colorado.”
Nothing there references Marples’ “Almighty God.” The “Supreme Ruler of the Universe” could be anything from a galaxy-sized black hole to the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Of course, this vagueness was completely intentional and in keeping with traditional American values.
Let’s keep religiosity out of government. It’s why the founders specifically created the Establishment Clause. We are not a Christian nation now, nor have we ever been. That’s a good thing. After all, I’m sure James wouldn’t want to be forced to wear a purple spotted colander on his head for the pirate-accented ribald limericks FSM requests before every meal. Extend the courtesy back, Jimmy. You do you.
