Durango girls soccer earns season sweep of Montrose

Demons take down Montrose 4-0, win 6th in a row

Thursday wouldn’t become a trap game for the Durango High School girls soccer team.

With a big matchup against Fruita Monument looming Saturday, the Demons were up for a rivalry game Thursday at home against the Montrose Indians.

DHS, winners of six consecutive games, scored twice in each half to secure a 4-0 victory. It is the second year in a row the DHS girls soccer team has earned a season sweep of Montrose.

“We wanted it,” said DHS junior defender Autumn Stevens. “We finally decided to work as a team. We all want the same thing, and we went out and got it. It’s beyond wonderful that we were able to come out and sweep them.”

Stevens and her teammates on the defensive back line were stout as ever for the Demons (7-3, 3-0 5A/4A Southwestern League). They didn’t allow a shot in the first half and held the Indians (3-6, 0-3 SWL) to only two shots in the game.

The midfielders and the defenders worked solidly together, controlled the action in the middle of the field and rarely let Montrose control the ball in the final third of the field.

“We put it together for 80 minutes, which we’ve been trying to do for 10 games now,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “It was eight players playing as one. When you do that, you’re hard to break down.”

The scoring opened with a goal from Caroline Knight. She was assisted by Taylor Klone on the 17th-minute score. In the 26th minute, Emma Aggeler got to a ball in a scrum in front of goal after a DHS corner kick. She calmly tapped the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Demons.

“We’ve worked a lot on corners, so being able to finish it is great,” Aggeler said. “We did a specific run to attack the goalie. Maddie Dearien got her head on it and jumped higher. It seems like she doesn’t jump that high, but she hit it out of the goalie’s hands. It bounced around and I kicked it past the goalie.”

Chloe Taylor scored only 4 minutes into the second half with an assist from fellow striker Lane Arnwine, as the two made a nice run in an odd-man breakaway situation.

Durango capped off the scoring in the 65th minute, as Knight delivered another great corner kick into the box that bounced off a Montrose defender and into the goal.

“We love own goals on corners,” Parker said. “It means your play worked.”

The Demons will look for a season sweep of Fruita at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Fruita Monument High School. DHS owns a 2-0 win against the Wildcats already this season. The two teams tied for the league championship a year ago, but Fruita won a tiebreaker by a one-goal differential. This time, the Demons want to win the league title outright and can establish a firm lead with another win Saturday. It would be the team’s first league title in 10 years, Parker said.

“It’s great to be up and winning in league so far,” Aggeler said. “We’re really hoping to win league this year, but we can’t get too cocky about it. We still gotta go to Fruita and beat them at home. They’re ready for us, and we’re ready for them.”
