It has become increasingly clear that our city administrators don’t consider fiscal responsibility a priority in their decision-making. However, the voters and taxpayers have made it clear what the majority expects from these officials.
The sales tax dedicated to Parks and Rec and open space needs to be redirected to the city’s general fund. The essential needs of a police station and road and bridge maintenance can then be addressed. There will be no $80 million for Ewing Mesa, no $50 million for a convention center and no $5 million to spruce up Santa Rita Park.
The days of reckless spending are over.
If more funds are needed, then some obvious cutbacks can be considered. Do we really need a natural resource and open space director? Do we really need three people to do the city manager’s job? Hasn’t the multi modal department outlived its usefulness?
There are plenty of ways to solve our revenue concerns without raising fees and taxes. It’s our city officials’ job to make it happen.
