Delta shocks Bayfield in 75-78 regional upset

Bayfield comes back in 4th quarter, can't take down Panthers

Down 21 points in the fourth quarter, the Bayfield boys basketball team fought back with the ferocity of its Wolverine mascot.

It wasn't enough to bring down the Panthers, however, as No. 28 Delta couldn't miss a shot in the first three quarters and held off two Bayfield 3-point chances in the final seconds to secure a 78-75 victory in the opening round of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A Boys Basketball State Tournament.

The Wolverines are now out of the regional action as Delta moves on to play Alamosa at 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner of the that game moves on to the Great Eight at Denver University.

Pine River Valley basketball fans still have two teams to cheer for: the Ignacio Bobcat girls play at 1 p.m. Saturday in Gunnison, followed by the boys at 2:30 p.m. in 2A regional action.
