Kennedy’s 22 not enough for Bayfield at Pagosa Springs

Dozier, Lewis score 20 each for Pirates

It was a league rivalry game from the jump for the Bayfield High School boys basketball team to start the 2021 season.

The Wolverines traveled to Pagosa Springs to face the Pirates in the 3A Intermountain League and season opener Friday night. Despite 22 points from junior Landon Kennedy, the Wolverines (0-1, 0-1 IML) were defeated 57-41.

It was the twin bill of sophomore guard Gunner Dozier and senior forward Mitch Lewis that led the Pirates (1-1, 1-1 IML) to victory. Aidan O’Donnell, a senior forward, added 12 points for the Pirates in the home win.

Pagosa took a 13-5 lead after one quarter and made it 26-13 by halftime. The teams played an even third quarter with 13 points each before Bayfield won the fourth 15-12.

Senior guard Kacey Chandler scored 11 points for BHS, while Quintan Hunter scored four.

The Wolverines will look for their first win of the season at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mancos before next week’s Southwest Classic tournament with games against rivals Ignacio and Durango in a tournament at Durango High.
