On Monday, the community will have a chance to meet three finalists for the activities director position at Durango High School.
The candidates are vying to fill a position currently held by Dave Preszler, who is stepping back to a consulting role.
The district would not release any further information about the finalists last week, spokeswoman Julie Popp said. The candidates are scheduled to interview with DHS and Durango School District 9-R personnel during the day Monday.
The director will oversee almost 70 clubs and a thriving athletic program. If the school board agrees to allow the district to take out a loan for the DHS stadium remodel, which is scheduled to be decided at a meeting Tuesday night, the activities director will also be responsible for managing the bookings for the stadium, which are expected to increase significantly once the field changes from natural to synthetic turf.
More than 80 percent of DHS’ 1,100 students participate in at least one activity, Principal Leanne Garcia said. Next year, the school hopes that every student will be involved in at least one activity because activities have been proved to improve academic performance and graduation rates, she said.
