Mancos artist Brian Killigrew has been creating black and white photographs the old-fashioned way for nearly 30 years – capturing the images on film on a large-format camera and hand-developing them in a dark room. “Everything I do is manual,” he said. “I probably have 10 hours invested in a print before I start printing it. It’s a long process, but it’s very deliberate.” Killigrew has gathered roughly 40 of his best black and white images from the past three decades for a show that will open with a reception from 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Olio, 114 W. Grand Ave. in Mancos. The show features landscapes, abstracts and images like this one, “Cranston Press Gears, Mancos Colorado.” Killigrew said with the black and white format, he feels he is able to photograph what’s just beneath the surface of subjects. “In black and white I find there’s a little more sense of mystery and spirit to it,” he said. The show will be up through Jan. 3
