The Wolverines’ new offense put on a fine display Friday night.
The Class 2A No. 8 Bayfield High School football team waltzed past Kirtland Central 43-0 on Friday night in Kirtland, New Mexico.
“I was really pleased with the way our players made big plays and executed our runs and passes,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “And I’m really pleased with the way our offensive line gave our quarterback time.”
Kelton McCoy, the team’s senior quarterback, passed for two touchdowns, including one big play to senior running back Zane Phelps. Phelps also rushed for a pair of touchdowns, Heide said.
Also adding scores was Taed Heydinger, who hauled in one of McCoy’s scoring tosses. David Hawkins, a freshman running back, added another touchdown run, and Jesse Westbrook scored the Wolverines’ final touchdown of the game.
Heide was thrilled to see his new offensive system work so well Friday, especially after the team made some assistant coaching changes in the offseason.
“We have some real great skill guys who catch balls in open space, and Kelton is a big quarterback with a great arm,” Heide said. “If we can keep giving him protection, he can throw really well. It’s exciting to know that will be part of our game.”
Heide also commended the work of his defense in keeping the Broncos off the scoreboard Friday.
“Kirtland has some quick backs. They aren’t powerful, but they have nice skill guys,” Heide said. “Our defense really swarmed the ball. If one guy missed, the next guy would get it. We’re very pleased.”
Bayfield is off next week after a previously scheduled opponent had to back out of the game. The Wolverines (1-0) will wait two weeks before hosting Miyamura of Gallup, New Mexico.
