Bayfield steady as a rock to sink Shiprock by 55

Chalk up another win against a New Mexico opponent for the Bayfield Wolverines.

Bayfield High School traveled to Shiprock for the second game of its football season, and it didn’t take long for the Wolverines to build a 35-point lead to start a running clock, and it took even less time for them to end the game via mercy rule with a 55-0 win with one minute remaining in the third quarter.

“Shiprock was a bit depleted, but hats off to them for giving valiant effort the whole game,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said. “We had the stronger team, I guess.”

Bayfield led 28-0 after the first quarter, and the running clock started with 5 minutes, 9 seconds remaining in the first half when the Wolverines went up 35-0.

The Wolverines took little time to score again in the second half, as senior Anthony Chamblee returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.

Heide didn’t have exact statistics for the game, but he said Kelton McCoy, Brody Mcghehey and Zane Phelps all had multiple touchdowns. Taed Heydinger and Colter McMenimen also got into the endzone, Heide said.

“We didn’t throw it too much because we didn’t need to, and we wanted to establish our identity of running the ball,” Heide said. “We had a lot of long runs, and that’s what we have to do.”

The BHS defense forced multiple turnovers, and Heide called his defensive play stellar for the second week in a row.

“I have no idea how many turnovers we forced, but I don’t believe we allowed the other team over the midfield line except one time, and they never had more than one first down in a series,” Heide said.

BHS will travel to Gallup, New Mexico, next Friday for a game against Miyamura
